MK Dons Star Relieved To Be Back Amongst Goals

MK Dons star Alex Gilbey has revealed his relief after scoring his first goal in 10 outings during a 2-1 win over Harrogate Town last night.

The 30-year-old enjoyed a solid first half of the campaign and hit a rich vein of form between October and December, scoring six goals in five league appearances. Two goals against Chesterfield on December 3rd helped secure a sixth successive win, helping lift the Buckinghamshire-based side into the automatic promotion places.

Since then though, Gilbey had hit a dry spell. This coincided with a dramatic loss of form for the Dons, which saw them win just once during a nine game run. As a result, they have slipped into mid-table and have been left playing catch-up in the race for promotion.

Gilbey Back On The Scoresheet

MK Dons hosted relegation-threatened Harrogate Town last night hoping to rediscover their sparkle. They looked on course for the victory as the game entered added time, with Joe White’s goal proving the difference. However, the Sulphurites looked to have secured a point when Zico Asare levelled in the 92nd minute.

With more dropped points looking likely, club captain Gilbey took matters into his own hands. A minute after Harrogate’s equaliser, the former Charlton Athletic man weaved through his opponents defence before smashing home to seal a dramatic win.

Speaking after the game, via MK Citizenthe attacking midfielder revealed his relief at getting back on the scoresheet:

“That’s the hardest I’ve kicked a ball since I was about 12. I just hit it out of pure frustration, and I needed it personally.

“It has been a few weeks without a goal, and I’ve been thinking about it too much. Fortunately it went in and the most important thing is the win.

“I needed to score to get that off my back. Goals have dried up, but hopefully we can stand up and score some more goals now.”

Writer’s View

‘Season-defining moment’ is perhaps an overused phrase in football, but this could be exactly that for MK Dons. They were a club that appeared to be in freefall and looked as if they were going to have to settle for another season in League Two. This could prove to be just the tonic that Scott Lindsay’s team needed heading into this weekend’s trip to Doncaster Rovers, whilst Gilbey will be hoping that this will help him return to regular goalscoring action.
