York City have received a double boost ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Oldham Athletic, as both Lenell John-Lewis and Cameron John edge closer to full fitness.
The news provides manager Adam Hinshelwood with welcome options as his squad navigates a busy festive period in the National League.
Lenell John-Lewis Back in Action
Lenell John-Lewis, affectionately nicknamed “the Shop,” made his much-anticipated return during York’s 3-0 victory over Southend United last Saturday. The striker had been sidelined since earlier in the season and was originally expected to be out until 2025. However, John-Lewis featured briefly off the bench, much to the delight of fans and teammates alike.
Hinshelwood emphasised the importance of managing John-Lewis carefully to avoid further setbacks. He highlighted the striker’s contributions early in the season and noted the morale boost his presence provides both on and off the pitch.
Cameron John Nearing Return
Another positive development is the progress of left-back Cameron John, who has been out with a hamstring injury for the last five matches. After a full week of training, John could make the bench for the Boxing Day fixture, provided there are no adverse reactions to his recovery.
“Cam John is not too far away now,” Hinshelwood said. “He could be available to come on and be used off the bench. If it’s not Thursday, I’m sure that he will be in contention for New Year’s Day.”
In John’s absence, midfielder Ricky Aguiar has admirably filled in at left-back. Hinshelwood praised Aguiar for his versatility and recent strong performances, particularly in shutting down Southend’s top scorer Gus Scott-Morriss during York’s dominant win.
Squad Health and Illness Concerns
While the return of key players provides a timely boost, Hinshelwood revealed that illness has disrupted training in recent weeks. Several players and staff members have been affected, but the manager remains hopeful it won’t impact team selection for the Oldham clash.
“There’s been a little bit of illness going through,” Hinshelwood said. “As long as it doesn’t spread through the camp, I think we’ll be fine. Injury-wise, we’re just a couple of players away from a clean bill of health.”
