Preston North End Closing In On £3 Million-Rated Defender

Watford defender Ryan Porteous is on the verge of completing a loan move to Preston North End.

The Scotland international, rated at £3m by Transfermarkt, is expected to travel to Lancashire ahead of a temporary switch to Deepdale, with the deal set to be finalised before the transfer deadline. Despite reported interest from Hull City and Rangers earlier in the window, Preston have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature.

Preston Move After Late Injury Blow

The 25-year-old centre-back has made 25 appearances for Watford this season but now looks set for a change of scenery. Although Preston had already strengthened their defensive ranks with the addition of Lewis Gibson, an injury to Jordan Storey at Blackburn last Friday accelerated their pursuit of Porteous.

With Storey potentially facing an extended spell on the sidelines, North End acted swiftly, making their move in the final days of the transfer window. The deal will see Porteous join Preston on a straight loan agreement, with no option to buy included.

“The club had not initially planned to add another centre-back after signing Lewis Gibson, but Storey’s injury changed the situation. Porteous was keen to get the deal done, and Preston have moved quickly,” reported the Lancashire Post.

Porteous’ Career So Far

Porteous made his name at Hibernian, progressing through the club’s academy before establishing himself as a first-team regular. He played 157 times for the Edinburgh side, scoring 13 goals and developing a reputation as a tough, no-nonsense defender.

In January 2023, Watford secured his services for a reported fee of £450,000, beating competition from Blackburn Rovers. Since moving to England, he has been a key figure for the Hornets, making 82 appearances and finding the net on seven occasions.

His performances earned him international recognition, with the defender now boasting 12 caps for Scotland. He was part of the squad that competed in the UEFA Nations League and helped secure qualification for Euro 2024.

Hull City Interest and Watford’s Stance

Earlier this month, Hull City were strongly linked with a permanent move for Porteous, reportedly tabling a £1.7 million bid. However, Watford were reluctant to let him go permanently, given his importance to the squad and the fact that he is under contract until the summer of 2027.

Ultimately, a move to Preston on loan suited all parties. Watford retain their player for the long term, while Preston get an experienced Championship defender to bolster their squad.

Writer’s View

Porteous’ arrival is a much-needed boost for Preston, particularly with Storey sidelined. His aggressive defensive style and leadership qualities should make him an asset in the Championship. Although Hull City and Rangers were linked, the move to Deepdale ensures he gets regular game time in England’s second tier before returning to Watford next summer.
