West Bromwich Albion could be about to breathe another sigh of relief after it was revealed Southampton have found other targets in their manager search.
The Saints are searching to replace former Swansea City boss Russell Martin following his sacking on Sunday after a humiliating 5-0 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Multiple candidates have since been touted with the job, including Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, with rumours around the German cooling with recent reports.
Saints Join Wolves With Corberan Concern
Corberan has been highly praised for his efforts at The Hawthorns, earning him multiple links with Premier League sides such as Black Country arch-rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and now Southampton. However, a sticking point emerged with the release clause in the Spaniard’s contract, believed to be in the region of £2 million or higher.
And now according to reports from Graeme Bailey in TBR Football, three other names have emerged on Southampton’s priority list as they look for free-agent managers to take control at St. Mary’s. A name that has emerged is Portuguese manager Vasco Matos, who is in charge of Santa Clara and are currently fourth in the Primeira Liga after winning promotion last season.
His name is alongside former Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand and ex-Roma boss Ivan Juric, however it is believed that Matos is not a priority target, much in the same way as Danny Rohl. Southampton play Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, with under-21’s boss Simon Rusk in the dugout this evening.
Writer’s View
Carlos Corberan looks to be staying at West Bromwich Albion as it stands and that will be a big boost for the club’s promotion aims this season. He is an impressive and beloved figure at the club and without him they may not be competing at the level they are currently. It does feel inevitable though that he will leave should a Premier League return remain elusive, but Albion will be rewarded handsomely by whatever side opts to take their chances with Corberan.
