Norwich City boss Johannes Hoff Thorup has named which position he would like to strengthen as the January transfer window looms.
The Canaries made nine incoming signings across the summer, with attacking options a clear focus with the recruitment of Liverpool’s Kaide Gordon, Brondby’s Oscar Schwartau and Ante Crnac from Rakow.
Thorup Aims For Number Six
Answering a question from the Pink ‘Un, the City boss revealed that it was a number six, more defensive-minded midfielder he would like to sign across in this next window. He said:
“I think it’s definitely a role that we are looking for, to see how we again can make that group of midfielders as different as possible. So we have players that can cover more positions, but we also have players for different roles.
“We have some good players, midfielders who go forward and are attacking in their mindset. But I think maybe we could use a midfielder that has an eye for, ‘Okay, if he’s leaving that position, if he’s joining the attack, then I need to support and go and cover that space and make sure that if we lose the ball up here, then I can be ready on the counter’.”
Thorup also noted that the club would not need to focus on business within England due to the homegrown players rule clubs have to abide by in their squad lists.
Writer’s View
Norwich never really replaced Gabriel Sara, who left in the summer for Galatasaray, and they have seemed to be more exposed in defence as a result. Whilst Marcelino Nunez is certainly a good player, he does need some support in defensive midfield, especially in the times he is injured such as a month-long spell earlier this season. They could look once more at Liverpool, with Tyler Morton no stranger to Championship football with stints at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City over the past two years.
