Former Blackpool and Bradford City manager Gary Bowyer has emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant managerial position at League One side Burton Albion.
The Brewers have been without a manager since Mark Robinson’s dismissal in October, and Bowyer is now reportedly under consideration.
Promotion Pedigree and Experience
Bowyer, 53, is best known for his successful stint at Blackpool, where he guided the Seasiders to promotion via the League Two play-offs in 2017. After securing their return to League One, he steered the club to a solid 12th-place finish in their first season back in the third tier. However, Bowyer departed early in the following campaign.
In addition to his achievements at Blackpool, Bowyer has managed Blackburn Rovers, Bradford City, and Salford City. At Blackburn, he transitioned from youth coach to senior management, delivering consecutive top-half finishes in the Championship. His time at Bradford was more turbulent, as the club suffered relegation under his stewardship, though he remained to attempt a promotion push.
Following a brief stint with Salford City, Bowyer moved into coaching roles, including working with Derby County’s under-23s before returning to senior management at Dundee. He successfully led the Scottish side to promotion in 2023, earning the SPFL Scottish Championship Manager of the Year award.
Burton Albion’s Managerial Search
Burton Albion’s search for a new manager has faced hurdles, with Crewe Alexandra boss Lee Bell reportedly rejecting an approach to return to the Pirelli Stadium. With that setback, attention has now turned to Bowyer, whose experience in English football makes him an attractive candidate to stabilise the Brewers.
Bowyer has been out of management since leaving Dundee in May 2023. However, he has remained close to the game, serving as a commentator for BBC Radio Lancashire Sport to keep his knowledge sharp while awaiting a new opportunity.
