Burton Albion have confirmed they have parted ways with head coach Mark Robinson after a difficult start to the season
The Brewers are currently bottom of League One and have only claimed four points out of 11 games this season. It was ultimately last night’s 3-2 loss to Wycombe Wanderers that sealed Robinson’s fate, with news breaking this morning from Pete O’Rourke that the decision to sack him was made.
New Ownership’s Gamble Fails To Pay Off
Burton are still in the early stages of their time under the ownership of the Nordic Football Group and one of their first actions was to poach Mark Robinson from Chelsea’s Under 21 side. He replaced the outgoing Martin Paterson and the new regime at the Pirelli Stadium saw heavy investment into the playing squad.
Some of the best players in League Two last season were brought to Burton, including Salford City captain Elliot Watt and Crawley Town‘s standout striker Danilo Orsi. 23 new faces came through the door over the summer, including a few loanees from Stamford Bridge which the former AFC Wimbledon coach worked with.
However, it was a less than ideal start for Albion, with them firmly beaten by Lincoln City and were thumped by Blackpool in their opening matches. A succession of four draws came quickly after but have since slid further and further behind the rest of the pack.
Cambridge United’s resurgence over the past week have seen Garry Monk’s side leapfrog The Brewers and knock them down to the foot of the third tier, culminating in this decision, which was confirmed by the club shortly after rumours started to circulate.
Who Next?
Burton are now in the hunt for a new manager, and a few faces do spring to mind. Pete Wild is one, with him out of a job since leaving Barrow last season and had recently turned down an opportunity with Hartlepool United in order to find a role in the EFL. They could also turn to former face Gary Rowett, who has been free since leaving his interim job at Birmingham City.
Writer’s View
It felt inevitable that this was coming after the string of results Burton Albion have been on. Mark Robinson just couldn’t get it to click with the squad overhaul that happened over the summer and has now paid the price. With the investment NFG brought in over the summer, they would do the same with their head coach and for that Gary Rowett would be an ideal appointment.
