League One leaders Birmingham City strengthened their push for promotion with a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers, thanks to a stunning early goal from Tomoki Iwata and a late penalty from Jay Stansfield.
The result moves Birmingham four points clear at the top, with a game in hand, as nearest rivals Wrexham dropped points.
Early Magic from Iwata
Birmingham wasted no time in taking the lead at St Andrew’s, with Japanese playmaker Iwata scoring inside the first three minutes. After a failed clearance by the Bolton defence, Iwata seized the opportunity, volleying the ball into the bottom left corner with his left foot, giving goalkeeper Luke Southwood no chance.
Chris Davies’ side dominated the first half with their fluent passing game but found it difficult to turn their possession into more goals. A powerful shot from Alfie May was their only real threat before the break, as Bolton struggled to get a foothold in the match.
Bolton Resilient but Stansfield Seals the Win
After halftime, Birmingham continued to press for a second goal. Ethan Laird, returning to the starting lineup, came close in the 55th minute when his header from an Iwata cross forced a save from Southwood. The Bolton keeper was again called into action moments later, denying May from close range.
Despite Birmingham’s control, Bolton remained dangerous on the counter-attack. The visitors almost snatched an equaliser when substitute John McAtee found space in the box, only for Blues goalkeeper Ryan Alsop to make a crucial save with his legs.
Birmingham finally put the game to bed in the 86th minute when Keshi Anderson was fouled by Will Forrester near the byline. Stansfield stepped up to take the penalty, sending a powerful right-footed shot straight down the middle to secure all three points.
The win keeps Birmingham in pole position in the League One promotion race, with a four-point gap over second-placed Wrexham. The nature of the win was impressive, with the Blues dominant from start to finish.
Writer’s View
Birmingham’s victory reflects their dominance in League One this season. Iwata’s early strike set the tone, and while they struggled to extend their lead, Stansfield’s penalty ensured a deserved win. With a four-point cushion and a game in hand, Chris Davies’ side are well-positioned to continue their promotion charge. Bolton, though resilient, lacked the cutting edge to cause an upset.
