Salford City CEO Reveals Shock Departure

Salford City‘s Chief Executive Officer Nicky Butt has revealed that he is stepping down from his role at the club.

Butt, who is also a part owner at the Moor Lane side, took over the role from fellow Manchester United star Gary Neville in 2022. Under his tenure, the club reached the League Two playoffs for the first time under Neil Wood, but have since been stuck in the middle of the pack in the fourth tier.

“Business as usual”

In a statement published on the club’s website today, Butt announced he was stepping away from his duties.

“Whilst I have enjoyed the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief Executive role and discovered a huge amount about the challenges an EFL club faces away from the football pitch, I have recently realised how much I miss the coaching and development of players, and this has increased my desire to get back into that side of the game.

“Over the past few months there have been several exciting opportunities put forward to me that have put my focus back on coaching and on the grass. That being said I have always wanted to put Salford first, and we now have experienced executives within the senior management team here which means that I can step away from my current duties without any impact on current operations and it will be very much business as usual.”

The news comes as rumours around Ammies Director of Youth Development Chris Casper continue to circulate. According to journalist Alan Nixon, he is set to move to Championship side Burnley to become The Clarets’ Academy Manager.

On the pitch, City are 16th in League Two after 10 games, having lost their most recent match at home to Grimsby Town. They have lost three of their last five and are preparing to travel to Crewe Alexandra this weekend.

Writer’s View

It has been a period of change at Salford City, with major investor Peter Lim leaving and now Nicky Butt is stepping back from his duties. On the pitch, it seems that the project since The Class of 92 took over a decade ago has hit a snag, losing ground on where they were a few seasons ago with a play-off charge. It does seem that they are confident that they can keep the ship steady despite the recent outgoings though and put last season’s relegation worries behind them.
