EFL Manager Turns Down Hartlepool United Chance

Hartlepool United has missed out on securing the services of Pete Wild as they are looking to secure a new permanent manager quickly.

The North-East club removed Darren Sarll of his duties yesterday, with former Cardiff City boss Lennie Lawrence set to take charge ahead of their game against Maidenhead United.

Pete Wild Turns Down Pools

BBC Radio Tees’ Rob Law confirmed that Pete Wild will not be the next man in the hot seat at Victoria Park. According to his report, the former Barrow boss is not interested in dropping back down into the National League and would prefer his next role to be with an EFL side.

The 40-year-old has previous experience in non-league through his times at Oldham Athletic and Halifax Town before making the switch to The Bluebirds in 2022. He led them to ninth and eighth-placed finishes in the fourth tier but left the club at the end of the season after missing out on the playoffs.

Managerial Merry-Go-Round Continues

Hartlepool are now in the process of installing their fourth permanent manager in the past 12 months. John Askey was the first, managing from February 2023 to the end of that year after he could not stop the club from sliding down the National League table following their relegation. He was eventually replaced by Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips, but he left after his contract expired at the end of that season.

Sarll was appointed the same day, and got to work with moves for former EFL players such as Morecambe‘s Adam Smith, Billy Sass-Davies from Crewe Alexandra and a loan for Charlton Athletic’s Nathan Asiimwe. The former Yeovil Town manager failed to capture any real form, ending with the club missing out on the FA Cup first round proper for only the second time in its history.

Writer’s View

It was very ambitious to try and go for Pete Wild to be their next boss but ultimately has not paid off. His exploits with Barrow has earned him the right to try and get a new job in the EFL so Hartlepool United will have to look elsewhere. Lennie Lawrence is a very experienced head to lead them in the meantime so until they find Darren Sarll’s successor, they are in safe hands.
