Swansea City Boss Confirms Major Absence For Sunderland Game

Swansea City will be without veteran midfielder Joe Allen for their upcoming game against Sunderland after Luke Williams confirmed it was too soon for him to play.

The Wales international was forced off of the pitch in The Jacks’ 1-1 draw with Luton Town last weekend and as a result missed out on their next game against Plymouth Argyle.

Christmas Return On The Cards

Whilst he will miss their clash with The Black Cats, Luke Williams felt optimistic about his chances to play across the Christmas period. They face Hull City, Queens Park Rangers and Luton Town once more in their final matches of 2024.

Speaking to the media following their win over Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims, the former Notts County boss provided an update on Allen. He said (Quotes via Northern Echo):

“Unfortunately he felt something at the end of the last game and it turned out to be a small problem that is going to keep him sidelined for a short period of time.

“I think there’s a chance that we see him over Christmas but we have to be very careful with Joe. He is royalty around these parts.

“Joe will do everything, he is an incredible pro, and the medical team will help him. Hopefully we’ll be able to see him at the back end of the Christmas period.”

Writer’s View

Joe Allen is a leader within the Swansea City squad so to have him missing for these next few games which could be pivotal for their fortunes does hurt. Nevertheless, The Swans have a very strong midfield with Matt Grimes, Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen when he drops back all very effective in the middle of the park. With Oliver Cooper still recovering from a broken foot, this will be a brilliant chance for the young Ben Lloyd to get some Championship minutes under his belt when needed.
