Former Swansea City boss Russell Martin has been sacked by Premier League Southampton following their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s on Sunday.
The result leaves the Saints rock bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from 16 matches this season, nine points adrift of safety. Martin, who led the Swans to 15th and 10th in the Championship, guided Southampton to Premier League promotion last season via a play-off final victory over Leeds United but struggled to replicate that success in the top flight.
His tenure ended after a dismal run of 13 defeats in 16 league matches, with Southampton scoring just 11 goals—the lowest tally in the division.
Fan Discontent and Decision to Part Ways
During the humbling defeat against Spurs, Southampton fans displayed banners calling for Martin’s dismissal. Later that evening, the club announced his departure. In a statement, Southampton thanked Martin for his contributions but acknowledged the urgent need for improvement.
“We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin. Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.”
The statement continued: “The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations. We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.”

Interim Plans and Academy Talent
Southampton announced that Under-21s Manager Simon Rusk will take over on an interim basis while the search for a permanent replacement begins. The club expressed pride in their academy’s contributions, stating: “Behind the scenes, we are encouraged by the continued development of talent coming through our Academy. We are proud of the contributions our young players are making and are confident this will remain a source of strength and pride for everyone associated with the club.”
Despite their struggles, Southampton praised the support of their fans: “Your understanding and passion, even when results have not been what we all want, continue to drive our long-term commitment to the club.”
