Premier League outfit Southampton have not contacted Sheffield Wednesday over their vacant managerial position, despite being heavily linked with a move for Danny Rohl.
The Saints parted company with Russell Martin at the weekend following their 5-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s. It was a result which left Southampton rooted firmly to the bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from their opening 16 matches.
Owls boss Rohl was immediately installed as one of the favourites after Martin’s dismissal. The 35-year-old had previously spent time at Southampton as a coach and is currently in his first senior managerial position. He is widely considered one of the hottest young managers in football thanks to the heroics he has performed at Hillsborough since taking the job in October 2023.
Southampton Draw Up Shortlist
According to Sky Sports, West Bromwich Albion head coach Carlos Corberan is of significant interest alongside former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand. The report claims that another unnamed foreign boss is also of interest.
Whilst Rohl is under consideration, it is said that no contact has been made with Sheffield Wednesday. With Southampton keen to make an appointment before their Premier League clash with Fulham this weekend, that seemingly makes a move unlikely.
After guiding the Yorkshire-based club to Championship safety from an almost impossible position last season, the young coach was handed a new long-term deal in May, thought to last until 2027. He has followed up that loyalty this season and Wednesday currently sit ninth in the table, five points off the play-off places.
Writer’s View
Sheffield Wednesday are well aware that bigger clubs will eventually come knocking for Danny Rohl, although they looked to have survived an approach this time around. In truth, the German shouldn’t be looking at Southampton for his next role. The Saints are destined to return to the Championship next season, whereas the job he has performing at the Owls mean they are well and truly a club on the rise.
Tying him down to a long-term deal was an exceptionally smart move. If he continues on the same trajectory as he is now, it will take a big fee to prise him from Hillsborough. In the meantime, Wednesday fans are just enjoying the ride.
