Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has been linked with the vacancy at Southampton after their decision to sack Russell Martin.
The former Swansea City boss was dismissed by The Saints just hours after their devastating 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, bookending a dire start to their life back in the Premier League. He was the second casualty from the top flight on the day, with Wolves also sacking Gary O’Neill, with West Bromwich Albion’s Carlos Corberan a name of interest in that vacancy.
Owls Boss Liked By Saints
According to reports following the decision to oust Martin, journalist Jack Rosser revealed that some people within the hierarchy at St. Mary’s are admirers of Danny Rohl. He also stated that a future manager in Hampshire would more likely be a foreign appointment.
Rohl has a great track record since becoming the Wednesday manager, helping stave off relegation in his first six months and has since brought the club on leaps and bounds in their second season in the Championship. He earned a new three-year contract at Hillsborough in the summer, and have the club just five points off the play-offs as 2024 enters its final games.
The German, who is the youngest coach in the EFL, has previously worked at Southampton as a coach under Ralph Hassenhuttl before joining the German National Team as an assistant manager prior to arriving at Wednesday.
Their next game sees them welcome Stoke City to South Yorkshire on Saturday, with The Owls aiming to achieve a fourth win in six games.

Writer’s View
It is inevitable that these Championship clubs will have their managers poached by the bigger teams and links to Danny Rohl make sense due to his history with Southampton. However, the move does not feel like it should be the one for Southampton unless they are prepared to give him enough time to build the club back up. If The Saints are looking to beat the drop, appointing an inexperienced manager no matter how good they are would not be the wisest of choices. But with Rohl becoming hot property, perhaps they should take their chance before a rival side does.
