Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering recalling 19-year-old centre-back Ashley Phillips from his loan spell at Stoke City to address a defensive crisis.
Phillips, who joined Spurs from Blackburn Rovers in a £3 million deal in the summer of 2023, has been on loan at Championship side Stoke City this season. He has made 13 appearances for the Potters, showcasing his potential and gaining valuable experience. Spurs included a recall clause in the loan agreement, which they can trigger starting in January.

The injury list for Spurs includes Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both of whom sustained muscle injuries during Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Chelsea. Romero is reportedly facing a six-week layoff with a quad injury, while Van de Ven is expected to miss three weeks due to a hamstring strain. Additionally, Ben Davies remains sidelined with a hamstring issue, leaving Radu Dragusin as the only fit senior centre-back.
Head coach Ange Postecoglou has been forced to turn to Archie Gray, an 18-year-old midfielder, to partner Dragusin in defence. This makes recalling Phillips a potentially necessary move to bolster their defensive options during the crucial festive period.
Development Concerns for Phillips
Phillips’ recall would mean he is ineligible to play for another club this season, which could impact his development. Since joining Spurs, the England Under-21 international has yet to make a senior appearance for the club.
