Premier League Strugglers Eye West Brom Manager in Shock Move

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly considering West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan as they search for a new manager following the dismissal of Gary O’Neil.

The decision comes after a disappointing Premier League campaign that has left Wolves in 19th place, five points adrift of safety. O’Neil’s tenure came to an end after a heart-wrenching 94th-minute defeat to newly-promoted Ipswich Town, a result that sealed his fate. Having managed just two wins in 16 games since his appointment in August, the club felt compelled to make a change as they battle to avoid relegation.

Corberan Among Top Candidates

According to reports from Alan Nixon via Patreon, Wolves have begun “sounding out managers” to fill the vacancy left by O’Neil. Carlos Corberan is said to be a leading candidate, with the Spaniard currently managing West Bromwich Albion, where he has been in charge since October 2022.

Corberan has a reported £4m release clause in his contract, making him a potentially attainable target for Wolves. Despite guiding West Brom to 7th in the Championship this season, the team has faltered in recent weeks, recording just two wins and 10 draws in their last 12 fixtures. Nevertheless, Corberan remains a respected figure, having led the Baggies to the play-off semi-finals last term.

“Wolves have been sounding out managers to replace O’Neil, with Carlos Corberan among the names linked to the role,” Nixon revealed.

Other names reportedly on Wolves’ shortlist include Graham Potter, David Moyes, and John Eustace. However, Potter and Moyes are understood to have expressed reluctance to take on the job mid-season.

Speculation had also surrounded former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but it later emerged that his presence at Molineux was unrelated to the managerial vacancy. Solskjaer was visiting his former assistant Kieran McKenna, who is currently managing Ipswich Town.

Writer’s View

The prospect of Wolves poaching Carlos Corberan from rivals West Brom adds an intriguing twist to the club’s managerial search. While Corberan’s Championship credentials are impressive, Wolves may face resistance from the Baggies, who are still eyeing promotion this season. The urgency for Wolves to secure safety in the Premier League, however, could make them aggressive in their pursuit, potentially leading to a fierce negotiation battle.
