Peterborough United Braced For January Transfer Raid

Peterborough United are braced for offers for striker from Ricky-Jade Jones from Championship leaders Sheffield United in January, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Blades hold a long-standing interest in the 22-year-old, having struck a deal for his services during the summer. It was widely reported that Sheffield United were keen on a double swoop from the Cambridgeshire-based outfit, which included defender Harrison Burrows.

Burrows of course did make the switch to Bramall Lane, but a deal for Jones was said to rest on Sheffield United’s takeover deal. The deadline for the deal passed, and the striker remained at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Sheffield United To Revisit Deal

Peterborough have endured a largely disappointing campaign in League One thus far. Having reached the play-offs twice in succession, they have spent large parts of his season languishing in mid-table.

Posh ended a run of three defeats yesterday with a thrilling 4-3 win over Crawley Town, with Jones scoring and providing an assist. This saw his goal contribution tally rise to 13 in all competitions, which looks to have once again caught the eye of Sheffield United.

According to Nixon, Chris Wilder’s team could reignite their interest once the transfer window reopens next month. The Peterborough academy graduate is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning his club could be looking to cash in instead of running the risk of losing him for free in the summer.

Peterborough To Dig Heels In

Despite his dwindling deal, chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed last month that his price has gone up, telling the Peterborough Telegraph:

“It’s lift off time for Ricky. Ricky has added regular goals to his game and he will be a striker everyone wants to buy in January.

“A club agreed to buy him in the summer, but their takeover didn’t go through on time and now his price has gone up. Ricky could go for even more than Kwame (Poku) as he’s been with us since he was seven.”

Writer’s View

This news will come of no surprise to Peterborough, who have already admitted they could see both Jones and Kwame Poku in January. Although the striker’s deal in entering its final months, they have shown in the past that they won’t be held to ransom and will only sell players if they feel they are getting their worth. It would be a blow to Posh to lose one of their talismen, but they could land a hefty pay day along the way.
