Sheffield United Named As ‘Genuine Contenders’ For Premier League Youngster

Sheffield United are in the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster Lennon Patterson but face competition from a leading Premier League side.

The Blades are currently title contenders in the Championship this season and are currently three points clear of Yorkshire rivals Leeds United despite being handed a two-point deduction prior to the season’s start due to defaulting on payments during their last season in the second tier.

Defender On Blades’ Radar

According to the London Evening Standard, United are ‘genuine contenders’ to sign left-back Lennon Patterson after the teenager was granted permission to look at other options by the West Midlands club. However, a deal is not straightforward for Chris Wilder’s side with the 17-year-old currently on trial at Arsenal.

He played 45 minutes for The Gunners’ under-21 side against Sunderland this past week, which The Black Cats won 2-1. He had also been handed an opportunity to train with Mikel Arteta’s first team as part of his trial in London.

Sheffield United are currently thriving with their new left-back in the form of Harrison Burrows, who joined from Peterborough United over the summer. Former Norwich City man Sam McCallum has also featured in the position this season, playing 13 matches so far, 10 of which came from the bench.

Clubs will always want to find the best young talents they can and in this case, Sheffield United could benefit from someone who seems to be on the radar of one of England’s top academies in Arsenal. He will have a lot of learning and development to go through, but should Lennon Patterson join the South Yorkshire club, he will be a part of an exciting squad that seems to be thriving in the Championship this season. Loan moves to other clubs would probably be on the cards but he might be a brilliant understudy to Chris Wilder’s current first-team options.
