Leeds United and Sheffield United Eye Lincoln City Star Jovon Makama

Leeds United and Sheffield United are keeping close tabs on Lincoln City striker Jovon Makama, according to the EFL Hub.

The Championship outfits could make a move in the January transfer window or wait until the summer to finalise their plans for the 20-year-old prospect.

Makama’s Breakout Season

This season has been a defining one for Makama, who has emerged as Lincoln City’s first-choice striker. The 20-year-old has overtaken competition, including Sheffield Wednesday loanee Bailey Cadamarteri, to cement his spot in the starting eleven.

Makama has already scored five goals this season, including one in Lincoln’s recent 2-1 defeat to Rotherham United.

Interest from Championship Giants

Both Leeds United and Sheffield United have been monitoring Makama for some time. Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who returned to the club earlier this year, reportedly scouted the striker during a Lincoln game against Barnsley last season. Wilder was impressed by Makama’s presence on the pitch and has kept him on the radar since.

Leeds United also got a closer look at Makama during a behind-closed-doors friendly over the summer. Manager Daniel Farke sees potential in the young striker, aligning with Leeds’ long-standing philosophy of nurturing young talent. Despite being a raw prospect, Makama fits the mould of a promising forward who could develop into a Championship-quality player under the right guidance.

Lincoln’s Stance

Lincoln City won’t let their prized asset go without a fight. Makama signed his first professional contract with the club in May 2021 after progressing through their academy, having joined from Derby County in 2020. Following loan spells at Gainsborough Trinity and Brackley Town, he made his senior debut in August 2022 against Doncaster Rovers and scored his first professional goal shortly after.

In October 2024, Makama reaffirmed his commitment to Lincoln by signing a three-year contract extension, tying him to the club until 2027. Any potential move would require a substantial transfer fee, with Lincoln likely to demand a significant sum to part ways with their rising star.

Writer’s View

Jovon Makama is a raw but highly promising talent. His physicality and pace, combined with a growing tactical awareness, make him an exciting prospect for the future. Michael Skubala’s management at Lincoln has played a key role in shaping him into an effective first-team player. With over 70 senior appearances already, Makama has a wealth of experience for his age. Championship interest is both deserved and a testament to his rapid development.
