Sacked Championship Manager Tipped For Immediate Return With Oxford United

Just weeks after parting ways with Coventry City, Mark Robins has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take over at Oxford United.

The Championship side is on the hunt for a new manager following the sacking of Des Buckingham, who departed after a string of poor results left the U’s struggling in the league.

Oxford’s Managerial Search

Buckingham’s dismissal, announced after Oxford’s 3-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend, marked the club’s seventh winless game in a row. The U’s have secured just one victory in their last 15 matches, a run that sees them tumbling down the Championship table. With survival at stake, Oxford’s board is under pressure to appoint a proven manager who can quickly turn things around.

Robins, who enjoyed significant success at Coventry City before his recent departure, is seen as an experienced and ambitious candidate. During his tenure with the Sky Blues, the 54-year-old guided the club through promotions and stabilised them in the Championship. However, his desire to reach the Premier League remained unfulfilled, and reports suggest that ambition could influence his decision on his next role.

Other Contenders

Robins is not alone in the race for the Oxford job. Former Birmingham City and Derby County manager Gary Rowett is currently the bookmakers’ favourite. Rowett, who has been without a permanent role since a brief stint at Birmingham, is said to have strong credentials, particularly given his prior success in the Championship.

Crystal Palace coach Paddy McCarthy is also a contender, along with Steven Schumacher, the former Plymouth and Stoke City boss. Other names linked to the role include ex-Leicester City manager Steve Cooper and Wycombe Wanderers’ Matt Bloomfield, who has led his side to a surprising promotion push in League One this season.

Betting odds currently place Rowett as the favourite at 4/5, with Robins and McCarthy tied at 3/1. Schumacher follows at 6/1, while Cooper and Ryan Lowe sit further back at 14/1.

Robins’ Next Move

Since leaving Coventry, Robins has been linked to several managerial vacancies, including Millwall and Hull City. However, Oxford’s potential to rebuild and push for promotion may appeal to the manager. His track record of working under challenging circumstances and delivering results could make him a strong fit for the U’s.

Writer’s View

Mark Robins’ experience in guiding teams through promotions and his ability to work within tight budgets make him an attractive option for Oxford United. However, the club’s current form presents a daunting challenge, and Robins would need assurances about resources and support to consider this role. With competition from Rowett and other high-profile candidates, Oxford’s decision could hinge on finding someone who can both steady the ship and inspire long-term success.
