Leeds United could rekindle their interest in versatile defender Ben Godfrey as the January transfer window approaches.
The Whites had been linked with the former Everton player during the summer, but Godfrey opted to join Serie A side Atalanta in an £11 million deal. Reports suggest that Atalanta may now entertain loan offers for the player, providing Leeds with an opportunity to revisit their pursuit.
Limited Opportunities for Godfrey in Serie A
Since his move to Italy, Godfrey has struggled for first-team minutes, making just four substitute appearances in the 2024/25 campaign. Despite Atalanta’s strong performance at the top of the Serie A table under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, the 26-year-old has found himself on the fringes, with Gasperini favouring a settled three-man defence.
Godfrey, who can play as a centre-back or full-back, is reportedly attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Brighton and Forest are believed to be particularly keen on the twice-capped England international.
Leeds’ Defensive Challenges
Leeds United’s defensive depth has been a concern this season, with only three recognized center-backs in Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, and Max Wober available. Austrian international Wober has been linked with a move away from Elland Road, while Junior Firpo’s future remains uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract. Firpo is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and could negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January 1.
