Blackburn Rovers are admirers of Peterborough United star forward Kwame Poku and are planning a January move according to Alan Nixon.
The Ghanaian international has been a high point in a season that has failed to live up to the last so far for Posh and has already contributed 11 goals and assists in the third tier so far. Darren Ferguson’s side have slipped down the table to 13th in League One, not helped by their defence which has conceded the most out of any side so far.
United Could Be Forced Into Sale
Poku is in the last year of his deal at London Road, and being under 24 means that should his contract expire at the end of this season, the club will be entitled to some form of compensation. However, this will pale in comparison to an amount that could be raised should he be sold in January.
Rovers are not the first Championship club to reportedly have an interest in the former Colchester United man, with reports in the Peterborough Telegraph before the summer transfer window opening mentioning that Bristol City, West Brom, Sunderland and Watford were all interested in a move for the winger.
Ferguson dashed any hopes of those clubs securing their target later in the window and a new deal was tabled to him. According to Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony, those talks around renewing were scheduled to resume at the end of August.
Rovers Look To Strengthen Attack
Blackburn had an electric start to this campaign but have slowed down over recent weeks. John Eustace went heavy into the transfer window this summer, with Yuki Ohashi, Andi Weimann, Todd Cantwell and Amario Cozier-Duberry all arriving at Ewood Park recently.
Writer’s View
Kwame Poku is showing his ability in a Posh side that has failed to recapture last season’s form. Peterborough had so many standout talents in players like Harrison Burrows and Ronnie Edwards that the 23-year-old went under the radar slightly. He would be a great fit for a Blackburn side that are still searching for a standout right-sided winger, with Cozier-Duberry and Andi Weimann not delivering as much as some would like. A sale of Poku would once again demonstrate Peterborough’s renowned reputation for finding and developing some of the best talent in England recently.
