Colchester United manager Danny Cowley insists the spirit and togetherness of his squad is the key to getting a good result against Salford City, according to a report in The Gazette.
The U’s head into tomorrow’s lunchtime clash four points above the drop zone and four points behind their visitors.
Increasing Injury List
Colchester goes into this fixture missing a growing number of key players, including Samson Tovide, Anthony Scully and Owura Edwards.
However, Cowley wants his players to meet this challenge head-on.
“We obviously have a number of injuries to key attacking players, so it’s tough.”
“In moments of adversity, you learn a lot and if you want to be good, you have to dig deep.”
He believes that everyone at the club has a role to play in kickstarting the club’s season.
“You definitely can’t fault the spirit and the togetherness and willingness of the group and this is going to be so important, going forward.”
“Come Saturday, it’s going to need all of us – the players, the staff and of course, our wonderful supporters.”
A Challenging Spell
After last Saturday’s disappointing defeat to Cheltenham Town, Colchester were back in action quickly and gained a creditable draw at playoff-chasing Chesterfield on Tuesday night.
Despite the injury issues, Cowley is confident his side has the physical attributes to cope with the demanding League Two schedule.
“We train the body to be fitter and stronger and the games are ultimately opportunities to develop physically.”
“I suppose if you have the weak mind, you’re tired after running 12.5k but if you’re strong-minded, you’re fitter and stronger as a consequence.”
“We know how the human body and fitness adaptation works and you work the body harder than it wants to be worked.”
Writer’s View
As they have been since the Cowley brothers took charge, Colchester are probing hard to beat but find victories tough to come by.
If and when they get players back from injury, the squad is talented enough to win games at League Two level. Until then, the brothers will have to use all their know-how to finally find those vital three points.
