Wrexham are intensifying their search for midfield reinforcements following a string of injuries impacting their squad depth.
Key players, including George Evans, Jack Marriott, and Steven Fletcher, have all been sidelined, with Evans and Marriott likely to be absent for the remainder of the season. Manager Phil Parkinson now looks to strengthen Wrexham’s ranks to maintain their standing in League One.
According to reports, Wrexham are close to securing a deal with Matty James, a former Leicester City midfielder recently released by Bristol City. James’s addition would provide much-needed experience in central midfield and offer cover for Evans during his recovery.
With the imminent arrival of James, Wrexham have reportedly moved on from pursuing Joe Morrell, the Welsh international midfielder currently with Portsmouth. Morrell had previously attracted interest from Wrexham over the summer, though an injury prevented any progress at the time.
Morrell Expresses Enthusiasm for Wrexham’s Project
While Morrell’s potential move to Wrexham seems unlikely at this stage, the midfielder hasn’t ruled out the possibility of joining the club in the future. Speaking to BBC Wales, Morrell shared his admiration for Wrexham’s growth and the excitement surrounding the club’s ambitions.
“Wrexham is obviously an exciting club at the minute. I think in the Football League, there are not many more exciting projects than Wrexham, and to play for a Welsh club is something I would love to do at some point as well,” Morrell stated. He added, “But to be fair, I don’t think they need much help at the minute. Maybe they’re not in the market for a midfielder, but if they were, then it definitely would be something I’d be interested in.”
When Morrell was briefly available over the summer, Wrexham opted to sign George Dobson. With Dobson now a key figure and Morrell still regaining full fitness, it appears the timing just wasn’t right for this potential transfer.
Though the door may be closed for now, both Morrell and Wrexham could revisit the possibility down the line, especially as Morrell has made his interest in playing for the Welsh club clear.

Writer’s View
Morrell’s enthusiasm for Wrexham reflects the club’s rapid rise and appeal, even among established players in the Football League. While the timing didn’t favor a Morrell move, his potential fit in Wrexham’s midfield is undeniable. If he maintains his form and Wrexham continue to thrive, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him in a Wrexham kit sooner rather than later.
