Wrexham Chasing Rival’s Former Striker On Free Transfer

Wrexham are interested in signing former Bolton Wanderers striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson on a free transfer, according to The Bolton News.

Bodvarsson is still without a club having left Wanderers in the summer.

Who Is Jon Dadi Bodvarsson?

Bodvarsson is a 32-year-old Icelandic international who represented Bolton for two and a half years after signing from Millwall.

The 64-cap international played 94 times for the Lancashire outfit, scoring 25 times. He was part of the side that claimed the EFL Trophy in 2023.

Before his move to the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bodvarsson played Championship football with Millwall having convinced the Lions to pay over £700,000 to Reading for his services.

Wolverhampton Wanderers first brought Bodvarsson to England in a deal worth over £2.5 million from the German side 1 FC Kaiserslautern in 2016.

The striker has also represented clubs in Norway, Denmark and his homeland as well as appearing at Euro 2016, including the famous victory over England, and the 2018 World Cup.

Why Are Wrexham Interested?

Wrexham have made an excellent start to life in League One having gained a successive promotion last season.

The Red Dragons currently occupy second spot in the third tier, four points behind leaders Birmingham City.

However, they have suffered injury setbacks in recent weeks with top scorer Jack Marriott suffering a broken leg and Steven Fletcher being ruled out through a knee injury.

This has left Phil Parkinson with two fit senior strikers in the shape of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, with youngsters Mo Faal and Callum Edwards adding to the forward line.

Is Bodvarsson Open To A Move?

Speaking to The Bolton News in the summer, the 32-year-old said, “We would like to stay in England, we are comfortable here and used to the environment. England would be nice to continue because I know the environment really well.”

“You know that it is family first now and that as my daughter, who has just been in reception, gets that bit older she will feel it a little more moving away.”

As a short-term fix, this might work. Bodvarsson knows the league and has stated he would like to stay in English football.

He is not a prolific goalscorer so his addition wouldn’t replace Marriott’s lost goals but he could ease the workload on Palmer and Mullin.
