Latest Hartlepool United Manager Rumour Quashed

Hartlepool United are still on the lookout for a new manager after rumours of a potential candidate being interviewed were ruled out.

Pools sacked Darren Sarll earlier this month following a poor start to the season and were also knocked out of the FA Cup in its qualifying stages. Former Luton Town boss Lennie Lawrence has been put in interim charge at the club, seeing out 1-1 draws against Maidenhead United and Altrincham.

Former Stockport County Man Ruled Out

Rumours over the past week had linked former Wrexham and Stockport County striker Andy Preece to the vacancy at Victoria Park. The 57-year-old is currently in charge at National League North side Chorley, who are second in the table behind Scunthorpe United.

However, BBC Tees reporter Rob Law has quashed these claims in a post published on social media. He said that the rumours were “wide of the mark.” He also added that interim coach Lawrence, who is also a non-executive director at Hartlepool, hinted at a preference for a younger, up-and-coming manager to take the hot seat in County Durham.

Two Potential Choices In The Stands

In the same post, Law also noted that both Neil Wood and John Coleman were in attendance for the draw against Altrincham. The former Accrington Stanley boss is still without a job following his departure from Lancashire at the back end of last season.

Wood meanwhile was removed days before the start of 2024 from his post at Salford City, having led The Ammies to the League Two playoffs the season before. Whilst he has not found a new management role since departing the Class of 92-owned club, he was part of the Canadian Women’s Football coaching staff at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Writer’s View

The rumour mill will always do some spinning when a vacancy is around and it is understandable why Andy Preece was linked to Hartlepool United. He has got his Chorley side competing at the top end of the National League North and as a result, would likely be linked to a vacancy in the division above.

Of the two in the stands at Altrincham, Neil Wood would be the choice closest matched to Lennie Lawrence’s wish. He pushed a Salford City side to the brink of promotion from League Two and if he can replicate that at Pools, they could be challenging to get back into the EFL sooner rather than later.
