Oxford United Enter Championship Transfer Showdown

Oxford United have made their presence known in the battle over Norwich City winger Abu Kamara according to the Oxford Mail.

The 21-year-old is trying to force his way out of Carrow Road after handing in a transfer request last week. Last season showed Kamara’s potential as he contributed to Portsmouth‘s League One title victory and has put the winger on the radar of multiple clubs this summer.

Pompey are one of the sides assessing a move for the London-born player, hoping to bring in one of their loan stars back to Fratton Park permanently after missing out on Alex Robertson. The former Manchester City midfielder was wanted by John Mousinho’s side but ultimately ended up at Cardiff City.

Luton Town and Hull City are already known to have submitted bids to Norwich over a deal, with both offering £2.5 million to The Canaries. The Oxford Mail have revealed that United have now joined the pair, but it is unknown how much Des Buckingham’s team have offered.

According to the BBC, Hull is the preferred choice for Kamara in this window, with The Tigers seeking to replace players from their failed promotion push last season. Fabio Carvalho has since moved to Brentford on a permanent deal from Liverpool, whilst Jaden Philogene moved onto Aston Villa.

Kamara has already played for Norwich three times this season, scoring in their first-round EFL Cup tie against Stevenage. He has only 15 minutes in the Championship under his belt, making substitute appearances against Oxford and Blackburn Rovers.

However, he has been dropped from selection by Johannes Hoff Thorup over the past two games against Sheffield United and Crystal Palace, instead opting for Ante Crnac to start on the right-hand side. The Croatian joined the Norfolk club this summer from Polish outfit Raków Częstochowa.

Writer’s View

Abu Kamara will certainly be leaving Norwich this summer but where he will end up is still up in the air. Hull and Luton are surely the frontrunners as they have a chance to get into a promotion battle. Oxford United may be an enticing choice as he can become one of their focal points in the years to come, but ultimately they are at a disadvantage in terms of ambition and financial power to the rest of their transfer rivals.

The Oxford Mail have noted that United do have other options should they fail to secure Kamara this window. Des Buckingham’s team is in need of an adept right winger as they are having to utilise attacking midfielder Tyler Goodrham on the flanks. They made a good start to their life back in the Championship against Norwich but are now on a three-game losing streak against Coventry City twice and Blackburn Rovers in between. It was always going to be a difficult ask to remain competitive in this division but The U’s are showing they are more than just a pushover.
