Blackburn Rovers have fallen behind Lancashire rivals Burnley in the race for AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers, according to The Lancashire Telegraph.
It’s been an excellent start to the campaign for John Eustace’s team. Tipped by many for relegation before the start of the season, Rovers remain unbeaten from their first three outings, having recorded two wins and a draw. They have also progressing in the Carabao Cup with an excellent 6-1 victory over Stockport County.
Despite that, it is worth noting that both of their league wins have come against teams promoted from League One last season, and they will have a much tougher time on Saturday when they travel to Burnley.
Before that though, Eustace is hoping to add several names to his squad before the transfer window closes on Friday. A number of positions have been identified, one of which is between the sticks.
Aynsley Pears has retained his place as first choice goalkeeper for the opening three games, but Blackburn’s pursuit of Mark Travers is well documented. The 25-year-old looks set to leave Premier League outfit Bournemouth on loan before the weekend, with several clubs expressing an interest.
The Republic of Ireland international joined Stoke City on a season-long loan last summer, where he impressed during the early stages of the campaign. However, the deal was cut short in October after the Cherries suffered a goalkeeping injury crisis.
Travers will now get his chance at regular first team football and it was reported yesterday by journalist Pete O’Rourke that a move to Ewood Park was the most likely scenario. It now appears as if they could miss out though, with The Lancashire Telegraph claiming that Burnley have moved ahead in the race.
The Clarets look set to lose first choice goalkeeper James Trafford to Newcastle United in a big money move and see Travers as the ideal replacement.

It’s set to be a busy week at Blackburn. John Eustace is keen to strengthen in a number of departments, but time is running out. Liverpool’s Owen Beck looks set to add cover at left-back, ticking off one box, but losing out on Travers would mean there is only a few days to find an alternative.
This will come down as to whether the manager sees the goalkeeper position as a priority. They have already acquired young shot stopper Jack Barrett from Everton this summer, although he will be viewed as one for the future. Pears is more than capable at this level, but any injury could prove problematic should ample cover not arrive through the door.
