Luton Town have now reportedly pulled out of their pursuit for Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy following internal discussions at the club.
The Hatters had been linked with the Standard Liege centre-back over the weekend, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri stating that the two clubs were in “advanced negotiations” for a deal around €5 million (£4.2 million). It was also stated that he would have signed a four-year deal upon arriving at Kenilworth Road.
However, it seems that talks have broken down after internal discussions at Town, with boss Rob Edwards now opting to pull out of the deal. Sudinfo’s Kevin Sauvage revealled that the deal was effectively dead, and the 21-year-old has already returned to Standard.
Ngoy came through the ranks at Anderlecht’s academy, but made his senior breakthrough at Liege with 15 appearances in the Belgian Pro League last season. Les Rouges had a off-colour 2023/24, finishing 12th out of 16 in the top flight.
Tavolieri added to the story on social media, noting that the former Watford boss was already happy with the current central defensive options at his side and instead is seeking new signings in other positions. Luton have already signed Cardiff City‘s Mark McGuinness and Arsenal’s Reuell Walters this window.
Both have already debuted for the Championship club since arriving, with the former Bluebird starting alongside Amari’i Bell and Teden Mengi in the 1-0 loss against Preston North End last time out. It hasn’t been the best of starts as Town seek to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, only securing one point in nine so far.
Edwards’ team play Queens Park Rangers back to back in both cup and league before a fairly easier spell against Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle coming up. Town are not faring well going forwards either with the joint-fewest goals alongside bottom-placed club Cardiff City.

Rob Edwards has made his decision not to continue to pursue Nathan Ngoy this summer, already happy with what the club has. Mark McGuinness and Reuell Walters seem to be the replacements to losing Gabriel Osho this summer, but the report Sacha Tavolieri has published does hint at an internal dispute in transfer policy at Luton Town. Both board and manager should be pulling together and in unison as the window comes towards it’s end.
It has been a rough patch for Luton as they return to the second tier following that impressive but futile relegation battle in their debut Premier League season. Really their problem has been in front of goal and Josh Morris and Elijah Adebayo need to get clicking soon to keep within touch of the promotion battle. Tahith Chong is reportedly on his way out of Kenilworth Road, with Ipswich Town pursuing a deal. Luton should focus on extra attacking options before the deadline passes.
