French giants Olympique Marseille have submitted a third bid for Norwich City winger Jonathan Rowe according to The Telegraph’s John Percy on X.
Talks are said to be ongoing between the two parties after the new bid, which is reported to be valued at around £13.5 million. The deal is an initial loan move with an obligation to buy at the end of the 2024/25 season, with Marseille looking to delay the main payment to comply with financial rules. Progress appears to have been made between the two sides after the first two bids were rejected by the Canaries, and a move is understood to be likely before the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
A move would also be a popular choice with the player, who has made it clear he wants to leave Carrow Road this summer. Rowe is yet to appear for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side this season after asking to be left out of the squad for the opening day defeat to Oxford United, saying he was not in the right frame of mind to play due to the interest. With that likely to continue, the club seem to be looking to do a deal so as not to keep an unhappy player against his will.
The 2023-24 campaign was somewhat of a breakthrough season for the 21-year-old, who has 56 appearances to his name for the Canaries. He was a key player for the club last term and made 17 goal involvements, which as caught the eye of clubs in the market for a winger.
It’s been a mixed start to the season for Rowe’s current club, who have struggled in the winger’s absence. Should a move materialise, as is likely, it would likely be welcomed by many as a chance to reinvest in the squad and get players in who wish to play for the club.
Writer’s View
It would appear the writing is on the wall now, and that Rowe’s move to France is a matter of time. Despite being a key player last season, it’s hard to imagine Canaries fans will be too disappointed. Having pulled out of squads and made no secret of his desire to move, any fee will be greatly appreciated and reinvested, with Norwich having started the season badly. Depth is now an issue on the wing, with Abu Kamara also angling to leave the club, making a left-sided attacker a must for the remainder of the window.
