Burnley Winger Set For Saudi Arabia Move

Burnley Winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson is in Saudi Arabia ahead of a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Orobah FC, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X.

Gudmundsson has already passed a medical ahead of the move, which will see him sign a two-year deal, putting an end to his decade-long stay in English football.

The Icelandic international started his career with Breidablik in his native country before a move to AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie. A transfer to England with Charlton Athletic followed, with Gudmundsson proving popular at The Valley during his two seasons in South London.  He then signed for Burnley, where he has made 228 appearances during eight years in Lancashire. The 33-year-old had left the club following the expiration of his contract and Burnley’s relegation at the end of last season but returned on a one-year deal following Scott Parker’s appointment at Turf Moor.

Despite the new deal, Gudmundsson looks like he’s on the way out with all parties seemingly agreeing on a transfer. If he does move, he would leave on a high having scored what looks like his final goal for the club in his last game, netting in the 5-0 thrashing of Cardiff City. Burnley currently lie top of the Championship with Gudmundsson having contributed to their good start, so Gudmundsson will be remembered fondly in Lancashire.

What remains to be seen is how the club replace his experience. Burnley have a young squad having been overhauled by former manager Vincent Kompany, and Gudmundsson was considered a senior player. He may not have played every game in the last couple of years, but he was still a key figure who will surely be missed at the club.

Writer’s View

This is a tough move for Burnley fans, but it’s for the best. Gudmundsson is not what he was but provided great experience despite not being a starter any more. The squad look to have moved on so a move makes sense, and nobody is likely to begrudge the player of this chance. He is likely getting paid handsomely in Saudi as he approaches the end of his career and Burnley are getting a squad player off their books, so while it will hurt to see such a popular player go, this is a no-brainer.
