Brandon Thomas-Asante spoke openly about his decision to move to Coventry City this summer amidst interest from Hull City.
The forward moved from West Bromwich Albion to their Midlands rivals Coventry for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year deal at The Sky Blues. He has only played 65 minutes across three substitute appearances in the Championship this season, with a full 90 in the EFL Cup win over Bristol City.
Mark Robins’ side are currently ninth in the second tier, but both Thomas-Asante and starting striker Ellis Simms have failed to score in the league. Winger Haji Wright is currently leading the scoring charts following his brace against Oxford United.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former Salford City player discussed his reasons behind joining Coventry over Hull City this window. The Tigers were closing in on securing the 25-year-old with a deal agreed with West Brom and having a medical already scheduled before Sky Blues hijacked the transfer.
Thomas-Asante said (Quotes via Coventry Live): “It was a very dramatic day, it felt like a deadline day although it was nowhere near it but as it happens for players, you sort of assess your options.
“I was fortunate enough to have a degree of choice. There was specific interest, Coventry where I am now, Hull was another really viable option, a strong option.
“I can only speak highly of their owner, the manager and everyone at Hull but for me, it was about weighing up what was the best next step, being at Coventry right now is a place that has so much ambition.
“I’m a player who wants to play in the Premier League and speaking to the manager, he believed that I could do that under his guidance.”
Tim Walter’s side have since moved on to other targets, bringing in Mason Burstow from Chelsea as well as Union Berlin’s Chris Bedia, who has arrived in Yorkshire on a season-long loan. The news of the Ivory Coast international’s move came days before news broke of Oscar Estupinan’s expectant move to Mexican side FC Juarez.
The Colombian was not included in the City squad in their goalless draw to Millwall, with both new signings playing during the 90 minutes. Both are yet to score since arriving at the MKM Stadium.
Writer’s View
Brandon Thomas-Asante was an in-demand man this summer and ultimately chose to move to Coventry City. Both moves would likely have seen him behind either Ellis Simms or Oscar Estupinan in the pecking order, but with news of the Hull City man’s departure, it might be fair to say that the former MK Dons forward could have been first choice in East Yorkshire.
Nevertheless, Coventry was probably the better move. The Tigers were stripped of some of their best players from last season’s failed play-off charge, alongside the departure of Liam Rosenior. Tim Walter has done well to keep the squad together and has put them in a solid place for the rest of this season. Sky Blues have recently reached the play-offs and whilst they may have lost stars like Callum O’Hare to Sheffield United, they have replaced him really well with Jack Rudoni from Huddersfield Town. Thomas-Asante’s dream is to play Premier League football and with Mark Robins’ team it would be more likely.
