Charlton Athletic Set For Huge Transfer Swoop

According to the Football Insider, Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell is set to join League One outfit Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan.

The 26-year-old is set for a reunion with former boss Nathan Jones, who is currently in charge at the Valley. He will follow in the footsteps of Luke Berry, another one of Jones’ former players at Luton, who has also joined Charlton this summer.

According to the article, Campbell has passed his medical and has agreed to join the Addicks on a season-long loan deal.

The midfielder is out-of-favour in the eyes of Luton manager Rob Edwards, spending last season away from Kenilworth Road on loan at Millwall. The Scotsman has not been involved in any of the Hatters’ Championship fixtures so far, as Luton remain winless after three games.

Campbell made the move south from Scottish side Motherwell in 2021 for an undisclosed fee and proved to be crucial in Luton’s promotion campaign in 2022/23. However, new signings last season in the Premier League meant that the 26-year-old did not have a part to play, instead linking up with Millwall at the Den. Throughout an injury-riddled campaign, Campbell only made 12 appearances in all competitions, contributing two assists in the process.

Campbell is now set to make the temporary switch down to the third tier, joining the aforementioned Jones and Berry as the Addicks look to improve on their 16th-placed finish last season.

Jones’ first full campaign in charge at the Valley is going well so far, as Charlton have won all three league games. On the transfer front, it has been a busy summer for the Addicks, with eight incomings and 11 departures. Perhaps the most notable transfer saga of the summer was Golden Boot winner Alfie May’s departure to relegated side Birmingham City. However, the likes of Matty Godden and Gassan Ahadme have both come in to replace the departing May, with Godden getting on the scoresheet in Saturday’s win against Bolton Wanderers.

With less than one week until the window closes, it looks like midfielder Campbell will make it nine incomings, with a deal agreed and a medical passed. He will be viewed as another piece to the puzzle for Jones, as he will join the likes of Berry, Greg Docherty, Conor Coventry, Karoy Anderson and Scott Fraser in the heart of Charlton’s midfield.

Luton, on the other hand, have had a reasonably quiet window, with Campbell marking the sixth departure from Kenilworth Road. Only five new players have come in through the door, with Edwards able to keep the spine of his team that took on the Premier League last season. Their fortunes have also differed significantly from Charlton’s, as they have yet to win a game in the Championship and have managed to score just one goal in what has been a dismal start for the Hatters.

Writer’s View

Edwards’s treatment of Campbell may be viewed as harsh by some. He proved to be crucial in their previous Championship campaign, but with the incomings of Liam Walsh, Shandon Baptiste and Tom Krauss, it was likely that the Scotsman’s game time would have been limited.

An unfortunate injury-riddled campaign last time out does affect players, so making a temporary step down in division to play under a manager you know very well is a very smart decision on Campbell’s behalf. If Jones can get the 26-year-old to play like he did under him at Luton, it won’t be surprising to see Charlton amongst the teams in the promotion race come the end of the season. With the league as strong as it is this season, Campbell is an excellent signing for this level.
