Salford City Target Highly-Rated Championship Goalkeeper

Sunderland’s Matthew Young is the latest target for Salford City ahead of the upcoming League Two season according to a report by journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon.

After a disappointing 2023/24 season, the Ammies will look to forget about the campaign which saw them finish 20th. The season prior they were able to reach the League Two play-offs, but would lose to Stockport County on penalties in the semi-finals.

With the club’s huge ambition and investment from owners, results similar to last season can’t be sustained. Therefore, the signing of a highly-rated keeper could be crucial to their success.

Ahead of the 2024/25 season, both of Karl Robinson’s goalkeepers were snapped up. Firstly, 22-year-old Joel Torrance signed for Bala in the Cymru Premier and then first-choice option Alex Cairns also departed to join Leeds United to add to their depth amid rumours of Illan Meslier leaving the Whites.

As a result of no goalkeepers being available in the first-team squad, a fast deal will need to be sorted out. This is significant as the club are set to continue their season preparations with many pre-season friendlies in the upcoming weeks.

As a result, journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Salford want to take Sunderland’s young keeper Matthew Young on loan. The 17-year-old spent last season on loan at National League North side Darlington, where he played 14 games and kept five clean sheets.

Nixon further explained that the player is ready to go if he is going to start in the Salford side and talks will take place around their plans this week.

This comes as no surprise given the keeper’s pedigree, and he has been somewhat of a mainstay at both an under-18 and under-23 level for his boyhood club.

Young’s qualities also intrigued Manchester United and Manchester City, who scouted him in October 2023. However, nothing would come off the interest especially considering the Red Devils already have the highly-touted young keeper Elyh Harrison within their ranks.

Overall, this would be a great move for all parties. The goalkeeper will be able to gain valuable experience and play week-in week-out to prove his qualities. Furthermore, Sunderland will also gain from this deal as their prospect improves and could become a future first-team star or to be sold on for a decent fee further down the line.

As for Salford, they need a goalkeeper and Young seems to be the right fit. He possesses talents that many keepers at that level won’t have. However, he does lack experience in the EFL which could be a slight cause for concern but then again, following on from his performances for Darlington, he is very much already on an upward trajectory.
