Plymouth Argyle Join Race For League Two Defender

Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu has become the subject of Championship interest from Plymouth Argyle and many more, according to the latest reports.

The Pilgrims finished last season in 21st as the club narrowly avoided relegation by one point to the departing Birmingham City. A major issue in the season was the loss of Steven Schumacher who joined Stoke City, leaving the reins to Ian Foster who managed just three wins in 16 games and was sacked before the end of the campaign.

Upon the season starting, Wayne Rooney was appointed by the board in a bid to keep the club in the second tier following his disastrous term with Birmingham as he played a major role in their eventual demotion to League One last season.

In his opening day clash in charge, his side would be dominated in a 4-0 away defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. Aside from the many goals, 30 shots were conceded in total and four big chances were also missed by the home side as part of their stellar victory.

A factor accredited to this performance is the lack of movement in the transfer market thus far. Two centre-backs have already arrived to improve the backline that conceded 70 goals last season. Hungarian defender Kornél Szűcs and Victor Pálsson from KAS Eupen in Belgium have both arrived but lack experience in English football.

Furthermore, Dan Scarr would leave for Wrexham in League One. As a result, Rooney’s squad lacks quality and experience which could also become an issue as suggested by the poor performance at Hillsborough.

Due to this, Football Insider have revealed that Plymouth Argyle are interested in Fleetwood star Brendan Wiredu. The 24-year-old has vast experience in the English Football League because of his stints at Charlton Athletic, Colchester United and the Cod Army. This could be crucial in helping the side adjust to the new system and be more solid defensively.

In his most recent season, he appeared 36 times in League One as the Fishermen were relegated to League Two, having conceded 1.57 goals per game. In Wiredu’s most recent game with Fleetwood, he led his side to a 1-0 win over Grimsby Town this past weekend. Furthermore, he also offers versatility as he can play as a defensive midfielder and central defender, which could be important during the long season ahead.

As has also been reported by Football Insider, fellow Championship sides Derby County and Oxford United are plotting moves to sign the Fleetwood skipper. Alongside the three Championship suitors, League One clubs Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool and Wrexham, as well as Scottish outfit Hearts have also shown interest in Wiredu.

Fleetwood are said to be determined to keep hold of him but are bracing themselves for offers before the transfer window closes on 30 August. A deal could be necessary to avoid losing him for free next year as he has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Overall, this would be a great signing for the Plymouth Argyle. They need more experience in their backline and a leader like Wiredu, as suggested by their recent defeat and from last season as a whole. However, Fleetwood will look to keep him as they have already lost the likes of Promise Omochere, Ben Heneghan and Harvey Macadam.

Nevertheless, if the deal can be done as soon as possible, this will be good for the Pilgrims as he can make an impact immediately with their first home game in the Championship against Hull City fast approaching.
