Charlton Athletic Make Free Agent Decision

Midfielder Teddy Bishop is no longer training with Charlton Athletic after spending the last few weeks on trial with the club, according to journalist Richard Cawley.

The 28-year-old has been without a club since departing Lincoln City at the end of last season. The Imps confirmed in May that they had offered fresh terms to the former Ipswich Town man, although CEO Liam Scully revealed last month that he was unlikely to put pen to paper:

“I think we’re coming to the end of conversations there,” he told BBC Radio Lincolnshire. “Quite candidly, we offered terms and at the time they weren’t deemed acceptable. We’ve provided an exclusivity period that’s running out.

“I don’t want to be too crass and unveil things that are too private and personal, but I would probably say in the balance of probability, it will be unlikely that we see either of those two (Bishop and Danny Mandroiu) in a Lincoln City shirt again.”

News of Bishop’s arrival at Charlton emerged at the beginning of the month when he was named in Addicks’ starting XI for the pre-season friendly against Dartford. Manager Nathan Jones confirmed following the fixture that the club were taking a look at the player, and he has featured prominently in subsequent games.

The playmaker started last week’s clash with Crystal Palace, but he was a notable absentee in yesterday’s penultimate friendly before the start of the new season against AFC Wimbledon. Following the game, journalist Richard Cawley took to ‘X’ to reveal that the League One outfit were no longer exploring a deal, citing that outgoings will be needed before any midfield additions are made.

Charlton have already added the experienced duo Luke Berry and Greg Docherty to their central options. Cawley did state that former Luton Town defender Dan Potts is still training with the club, whilst veteran striker Danny Hylton was in yesterday’s squad.

Writer’s View

Charlton spent a long time looking at Teddy Bishop before making this decision, which does seem a tad unfair on the player. They would have already known that they had ample midfield options prior to his arrival. Maybe they were hoping to offload one or two more players before reaching this conclusion.

The former Lincoln star now finds himself without a club with less than two weeks remaining until the start of the new campaign. There are likely to be several teams taking note of his sudden availability, especially because his form at the LNER Stadium last season was impressive. He played a key role in the Imps stunning unbeaten run earlier this year and he would offer an experienced outlet at League One level.

Bishop will be frustrated, but there will be other opportunities.
