Fleetwood Town In Battle For Former Birmingham City Prospect

Fleetwood Town are facing a stand-off between three other clubs to secure the signing of midfielder Kane Thompson-Sommers.

The FC Halifax Town player was an important member of the side that reached the National League Playoffs, where they were beaten over two legs by eventual finalists Solihull Moors.

He signed for The Shaymen last July from Hereford United, and made 30 appearances across their league campaign, scoring once and appearing in 53% of all their minutes played in the competition.

But the 23-year-old is subject to plenty of interest from teams in higher divisions, with Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reporting that Fleetwood is one of the sides pursuing a deal.

Charlie Adam’s side are set to battle fellow League Two outfit Salford City for the former Birmingham City academy player, with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell and National League newcomers Sutton United also preparing bids according to the journalist.

The Cod Army will be seeking to reinforce their midfield for their first season in the fourth tier since 2014 after Gavin Kilkenny, Xavier Simons and Bosun Lawal, who all started the final game of Fleetwood’s season, returned to their parent clubs after their loan deals ended.

Similarly, Salford are in a rebuild of their own following the departures of club captain Elliot Watt to Burton Albion and the release of Stevie Mallan following their disappointing campaign in League Two which saw them finish 20th.

Thompson-Sommers is contracted to play for the Yorkshire side next season after being named on their retained list as they seek to make a return to the National League play-offs.

Halifax have lost many faces over the summer following falling short in the playoffs. Stalwarts such as Tylor Golden and Jamie Stott have left for new opportunities so there will be a form of restructuring at The Shay over the summer. Thompson-Sommers may not have been as important in recent successes for the club but was nonetheless important in their push for a place in the top seven last year.

Fleetwood Town are also in a similar spot following their relegation from League One. The top half of the National League is seen as being on level with League Two so buying from these clubs look like safe bets for sides. Joining a team like Town can be a great learning experience with an established EFL club and the midfielder can learn from veterans like Danny Mayor should he move to Highbury.
