Sheffield Wednesday Star Tipped With Move To League One Pair

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cam Dawson has been urged to leave Hillsborough this summer having failed to nail down the number ‘1’ spot this season under Danny Rohl.

The goalkeeper position was one area that the Owls never quite managed to settle during the campaign. Having started in net on the opening day of the season at home to Southampton in a 3-1 defeat, former manager Xisco Munoz opted to drop Dawson to the bench in place of Devis Vasquez.

The Colombian loanee quickly became Munoz’s preferred choice between the sticks during a dreadful, winless run of form for the South Yorkshire side. However, after nine games riddled with errors, Dawson found his way back into the starting lineup.

Former Sheffield United Star Linked With Sheffield Wednesday Switch

Early into the campaign, Munoz was replaced with Rohl and Dawson kept his spot in the team until James Beadle was brought in on loan. Past January 13, the 28-year-old didn’t make another appearance for Sheffield Wednesday.

Now, his future at Hillsborough is up in the air. While Beadle has returned to Brighton and Hove Albion from his loan spell, it seems clear that Rohl has no plans to reinstate Dawson as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper next season.

Speaking on the Football Heaven Podcast, journalist Rob Staton has stated that a “clean break” is potentially needed with the Owls and Dawson after 13 years, while claiming that he could go to a club like Barnsley or Rotherham United in League One [quotes via Sheffield Wednesday News]:

“Presumably we’ll try and get James Beadle back and that’s more likely now that they’ve stayed up, I would guess. No reason to think why that couldn’t happen. Unless someone is going to offer him a tremendous loan fee, so you would think he would come back.

Sheffield Wednesday Reignite Interest In 15-Goal Attacker

“So what does Cam Dawson do? Does he want to go somewhere else and start or be an understudy again? It’s difficult when you’ve grown up playing for a club, but I would have thought in his mind, a clean break is best.

“He could go to League One clubs and be a real asset. I mean, why not? Barnsley could be a good shout. Rotherham would be another one. He’s a really good goalkeeper.”

Writer’s View

Had Rohl trusted Dawson to be his main man between the sticks, Sheffield Wednesday would not have signed a teenager on a short-term loan to get them through the rest of the season. While Dawson may love the club, perhaps it’s time for him to leave on a permanent basis this summer.

There may not be many teams in the Championship willing to offer him a deal, but Dawson could certainly take a step down to League One and make a name for himself. Rotherham are one side currently on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following Viktor Johansson’s departure to Stoke City.
