Former Sheffield United loanee Charlie Goode is being linked with a move to bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday this summer following his exit from Brentford, according to the latest reports.
The Sheffield Star have claimed that there have been discussions behind the scenes at Hillsborough over the prospect of bringing the 28-year-old to the club as a free agent after he announced earlier this week that he would be leaving the Bees four years since joining for a reported £1 million from Northampton Town.
Sheffield United ‘Yet To Make Contact’ For Championship Star
Unfortunately, since moving to Brentford, the centre-back failed to break into the first-team, making merely 20 appearances in all competitions under Thomas Frank, including just six in the Premier League. Furthermore, he was sent out on loan during his four-year stint in London, joining Sheffield United during the 2021/22 campaign, where he only managed two appearances but has only spent time on loan at Blackpool and, this season, Wigan Athletic under the guidance of Shaun Maloney.
With his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign, Brentford have decided not to extend Goode’s deal, leaving him as a free agent this summer, but Sheffield Wednesday look keen to acquire the signature of the defender who once played for the Blades.
The Sheffield Star are reporting that Danny Rohl is keen to bolster his defensive options before the 2024/25 campaign begins and Goode is seen as a risk-free target. It has been said that the defender was on £8,000 with the Bees, although it’s unclear what wage package he could expect should he join the Owls.
Writer’s View
Goode proved himself to be an excellent defender during his time with Northampton in League Two but has failed to find his feet at any other club, including his stint out on loan. Injuries certainly haven’t helped him either. Just two appearances into his time at Sheffield United, he suffered a knee cartilage problem and was absent for the remainder of the season.
This next move will be important for Goode’s career. At 28, he is not getting any younger and if he feels he may be asked to warm the bench at Sheffield Wednesday, then perhaps he will need to assess whether that is the right move for him or not.
