Southampton Join Race For “Sensational” £12 Million Gem

Southampton are set to join the race for rising Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham as several other clubs are also keeping tabs on the teenage sensation, according to the latest reports.

The Saints are back in the Premier League after a twelve-month absence and will now reap the financial benefits of earning promotion to the top-flight. The club have also eased their wage-bill troubles as there are numerous players in the first-team squad on hefty wages who potentially would have had to be moved on if Leeds United were victorious at Wembley Stadium last Sunday.

Furthermore, the monetary ease of Premier League money offers the club on the south coast the opportunity to loosen their purse strings slightly in the hopes of assembling a squad capable of surviving in the top tier of English football.

Sunderland Eyeing Manager With 58% Win Ratio Who Once Bested Mourinho & Guardiola

Football Insider revealed on Saturday morning that one name who may not be at the St. Mary’s Stadium next season is Flynn Downes. Having spent the entire campaign on loan at Southampton, the West Ham United midfielder is set to be given a chance in pre-season to prove himself under the new Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui.

However, the Saints are eyeing up another player to bolster their midfield department, someone with a much higher ceiling than Downes. The Sunderland Echo are reporting that Russell Martin’s side are weighing up a move for Sunderland star Bellingham this summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated earlier in the week that Bellingham has ignited a transfer battle for his signature, with Premier League side Crystal Palace interested in adding the 18-year-old to an already-exciting squad under Oliver Glasner.

Nevertheless, there has also been intrigue over the past few months from Serie A giants Lazio and European titans Real Madrid. The latter take on Borussia Dortmund this evening in the Champions League final, spearheaded by Jobe’s talisman brother Jude Bellingham.

Jobe Bellingham has previously been described as “incredible” by former chairman of the Black Cats, Niall Quinn, while it has also been reported that Sunderland will look for £12 million for his signature this summer.

Writer’s View

£12 million is certainly affordable for Southampton who have now been lifted back into the Premier League, particularly for a player with the talent and potential of Bellingham. Furthermore, this type of deal seems perfect to keep in line with the club’s recruitment strategy over the past decade of buying low and selling high.

However, the Saints face some tough competition, especially from Crystal Palace who have proven themselves to be a haven for the development of young players without the added risk of being in a relegation battle next season.
