Under Embargo But Undeterred – Sheffield Wednesday Seeking Free Agents Amid Transfer Freeze

Sheffield Wednesday is reportedly in talks with the Football League, seeking permission to sign free agents to bolster its squad.

The Owls have entered administration, meaning they’ve been hit with yet more restrictions.

Embargo Placed On Top Of Embargo

Sheffield Wednesday had already been hit with several charges before administration, with Dejphon Chanisiri’s leadership resulting in punishments for money owed to other clubs, money owed to creditors and also for HMRC reporting.

Once those issues are resolved, the attached restrictions will be lifted. However, with the Owls now in administration, they are under an embargo that will only be lifted when a new owner has been finalised.

The uncertainty that has surrounded Hillsborough has seriously impacted Henrik Pedersen’s ability to recruit over the summer.

The Dane is now having to work with an injury-hit squad as he faces the huge mountain of attempting Championship survival.

Perersen’s side has won just 1 league game all season and was bottom of the table before being hit with a 12-point deduction thanks to entering administration.

Now, the Hillsborough side find themselves 13 points adrift of their closest rivals, Norwich City, 14 behind city rivals United and a giant 17 points off Southampton in 21st place.

Too Much Placed On Young Shoulders

Sheffield Wednesday were without several first-team players during their 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Pedersen was unable to call upon a raft of players, including Pierce Charles, Di’Shon Bernard, Ernie Weaver, Gui Siqueira, Nathaniel Chalobah, Rio Shipston, Olaf Kobacki and Mackenzie Maltby.

While the likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Nathaniel Chalobah are expected to return this month, the Owls will be without Guilherme Siqueira and Ernie Weaver for the entire campaign.

In that draw at The Hawthorns, only Charlie McNeill is not a Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate, having joined the club from Manchester United.

Wednesday’s current plight is further highlighted by the fact that at 22 years of age, McNeill was the most senior member of that bench.

The number of academy graduates being called upon is expected to form the core of the Owls’ argument to the EFL.
