Exeter City look for three more points against a Port Vale side still in search of their first League One win of the season.
Our Three Predictions For Exeter City vs Port Vale
- Prediction 1 – Josh Magennis To Score – 14/5
- Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 21/20
- Prediction 3 – Exeter City To Win – 19/10
First Prediction For Exeter City vs Port Vale – Josh Magennis To Score – 14/5
With the striker once again missing out on a call-up with Northern Ireland, Magennis has remained with the Grecians instead of travelling to Germany to help the Green and Whites on their quest for World Cup qualification. The 35-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down and has had a very promising start to the season with three goals in six League One appearances. He has been highly efficient with his efforts, scoring his current tally from just four shots, with the only other attempt forcing a save during their win over Peterborough United. While he may have had fewer shots than most, against a relegation candidate team ,he might have the chances to punish Port Vale, as he did against Posh.
Second Prediction For Exeter City vs Port Vale – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 21/20
Exeter have started this season promisingly with their attack, a far cry from last season’s start, where the defence were the standout performers. Magennis and striker partner Jayden Wareham have done well with five goals combined and substitute forward Sonny Cox has also scored a goal. Vale have also struggled defensively with nine goals conceded and are level with their hosts this weekend on two clean sheets across the season. Darren Moore’s side have however done well in generating chances despite their failures in converting their efforts into goals. Last weekend did see some promise with Devante Cole scoring on debut, and if he can step up again this time around there should be a few goals in this contest.
Third Prediction For Exeter City vs Port Vale – Exeter City To Win – 19/10
Port Vale need to get out of their rut right now and are still searching for their first league win of the season. Their only win on the road this season came in the EFL Cup against Blackpool, and only have one point to their name in the third tier in a goalless draw at Burton Albion. The Grecians have succeeded at home so far, only losing to Mansfield Town in Devon in league play. Their goalscoring looks strong right now at home, with big wins over Blackpool and Peterborough United, and could do the same to a Vale defence that haven’t done the best. City should have a decisive edge in this contest.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head
Exeter City may have a slight fitness edge having avoided a three-game week, with Vale having played Leeds United’s academy previously before their most recent fixture. The Grecians have had a solid but unimpressive start to their fourth season in League One, with three wins and four losses in seven matches so far. It was a loss in their most recent game, being beaten 1-0 on the road at Rotherham United. Their last game at St. James’ Park was a much better result for Gary Caldwell’s side, trouncing bottom side Peterborough United 3-0. Their attacking returns look set to be bolstered heading into this game with an expected return for Reece Cole following injury against Mansfield Town, while Johnly Yfeko looks likely to miss out.
Port Vale are in a very tough rut right now, with the Burslem side just one of two sides, alongside Peterborough United, yet to win a game in League One this season. With just two points to their name courtesy of draws to Burton Albion and current league leaders Cardiff City. Darren Moore’s side have however tasted perhaps some of the best victories of any League One side through the cup, with wins away at Blackpool and Birmingham City gifting them a home tie in the third round against Premier League title contenders Arsenal. Vale are the joint lowest scorers in the league so far, but showed promise in their last game, scoring twice in a loss to Leyton Orient, with debutant Devante Cole getting off the mark. The Valiants will see goalkeeper Joe Gauci return following his international duty with Australia being completed.
With Port Vale briefly dropping down into League Two, it has been 18 months since the last clash between these sides. April 2024 saw a 4-2 away win for Exeter City, with The Grecians overturning a 2-0 lead being spearheaded by Millenic Alli. The other fixture saw Vale win 1-0, thanks to Sheffield United loanee Ollie Arblaster. Since 2012, both sides are equal on eight wins with two draws being played out. Matthew Russell will officiate this game, his third appointment in League One this season and sixth game overall.
In the third tier, he has handed out ten yellow cards, one second yellow, one straight red card and two penalties across AFC Wimbledon‘s win over Lincoln City and The Imps’ win against Plymouth Argyle. His most recent game was in League Two during Swindon Town‘s away win against league leaders Crewe Alexandra.
