Lee Bell’s Crewe Alexandra opened the season in fine form, beating Salford City 3-1 thanks to goals from Kadeem Harris and a Conor Thomas brace and followed that with a 2-0 home win against Accrington Stanley thanks to strikes from Reece Hutchinson and Calum Agius.

League One side Stockport County inflicted a first defeat of the season of Crewe in the Carabao Cup but it was back to winning ways in the league when Tommi O’Reilly struck to beat Crawley Town at the Mornflake Stadium and The Alex made it four league wins from four when they came away from Fleetwood Town with a comprehensive 4-1 win. An on goal, Josh March, Agius and Hutchinson completed the scoring.

Since those four wins on the spin, Crewe gave played three league games and taken just one point, although they did claim a highly impressive 7-1 victory over Chesterfield in the Vertu Trophy. High-flying Gillingham left it late to score and take maximum points at Priestfield Stadium and Swindon Town were 3-0 winners at Crewe, with the scoring complete by half time.

Last time out against Colchester United saw Bell’s side claim a point on the road thanks to a 39th minute Josh March strike, his second league goal of the campaign.

Crewe Alexandra have scored 11 goals in their opening seven league matches with Agius, Thomas, March and Hutchinson all scoring two apiece while March has been in excellent form, turning provider on four occasions. Crewe have scored an average of 1.6 goals per game, conceded one per match and have kept two clean sheets.

Barnet started their first season in the Football League since 2017/18 with a 20 home defeat to Fleetwood Town, a 2-0 away defeat to Bromley and another defeat at The Hive, this time losing 2-1 to Walsall. They were impressive in their next outing, inflicting one of just two defeats suffered by Swindon Town so far this season, beat Ian Holloway’s side 2-0 away from home. Luton Town were next up in the EFL Trophy and the game ended in a comprehensive win for the League One side before Barnet suffered a disappointing defeat at The Hive to another struggling side in Shrewsbury Town.

Barnet have scored six goals in seven games with Oli Hawkins getting on the scoresheet twice. The Bees have conceded 1.4 goals per game and kept to two clean sheets.

Since 2010, these sides have faced off on eight occasions, with Crewe Alexandra holding a very small upper hand with four wins to Barnet’s three. With the Bees absence from the Football League stretching back seven seasons, these sides haven’t met since 2018 when Barnet lost their League Two status on goal difference.

In the last two meetings, the spoils have been shared. Crewe were the victors in August 2017 thanks to a goal from Chris Porter but were beaten in the return fixture thanks to two John Akinde penalties. The season ended with Barnet falling four goals short of safety as they finished level on points with 22nd placed Morecambe.

This fixture has produced some high scoring matches, including the August 2010 meeting that saw Crewe demolish their visitors 7-0, with the goalscorers including Clayton Donladson and the current Grimsby Town manager David Artell.
