Exeter City Boss Slams Grecians After Fourth Loss In Seven Games

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell expressed frustration with his players after their 1-0 defeat at Rotherham United, accusing them of being “tentative” and failing to show enough personality on the ball.

The Grecians suffered their fourth loss in seven League One games this season as Denzel Hall’s powerful first-half volley condemned them to defeat at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. The result leaves City in mid-table and continuing a frustrating pattern of alternating wins and defeats.

Caldwell’s Anger

“We trained probably as well as we’ve trained all year, but three o’clock on a Saturday is when you’re judged,” Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon. “You can’t be a good training player and then not want to do the things you’ve done all week. We had too many players that didn’t really want the ball.”

The Exeter boss said he had travelled to South Yorkshire confident of securing a positive result, but was dismayed by how his team handled the occasion. He criticised their reluctance to commit to the game plan and was especially disappointed with their passing quality.

“We didn’t pass the ball well enough, the technical actions were nowhere near the level these players can get to. We know they can do it because we’ve seen them in other games, but we have to find a way of getting them ready to produce that every week,” he added.

Lack of Personality

Caldwell lamented the lack of conviction shown, suggesting Exeter added to Rotherham’s cause by failing to take control in what he described as a “dead” stadium.

“We have to play with more personality,” he said. “Last week we were outstanding, but today we turned up tentative. We have to find a solution to that.”

The manager highlighted a recurring issue in Exeter’s campaign: inconsistency. Despite producing excellent displays in certain matches, his side have yet to back up victories with another positive result, leaving them struggling to build momentum in the opening months of the season.

Match Context

The decisive moment came six minutes before half-time when Hall struck powerfully from the edge of the box after Exeter failed to clear a cross. Rotherham might have stretched their lead in the second half, but goalkeeper Joe Whitworth kept City in the game with a series of fine stops, including a save from debutant Thomas Holmes. Late on, Exeter threatened a leveller when Sonny Cox narrowly failed to turn in Josh Magennis’ header, but the equaliser never arrived.

Writer’s View

Caldwell’s frustration reflects a wider concern that Exeter are too often caught between their potential and their execution. The quality is clearly there, but too many players seem unable to transfer training ground fluency into matchday intensity.

With a long campaign ahead, the Grecians must quickly find consistency or risk another season of stagnation in mid-table. Caldwell’s demand for personality is about more than technical ability, it is about mentality, and until that changes, City’s progress will remain uneven.
