Former Lincoln City & Gillingham Striker Joins National League Side

Hartlepool United have strengthened their forward line with the signing of experienced striker Vadaine Oliver.

The 33-year-old joins after leaving Bradford City in the summer and will add vital depth to Simon Grayson’s squad. He’s previously appeared for a number of EFL clubs, including Lincoln City and Gillingham.

Oliver Brings Vast Experience

Oliver arrives at Victoria Park with close to 500 senior appearances across the Football League and National League. Last season he turned out 18 times for Bradford in their promotion campaign before moving on loan to Shrewsbury Town, where he scored twice in 13 matches during a difficult spell that ended in relegation.

His career began at Lincoln City and has since included spells with Crewe Alexandra, Mansfield Town, York City, Morecambe, Northampton Town, Gillingham and Stevenage. His most prolific period came at Gillingham, where he hit 31 goals in 93 games and established himself as one of the division’s more reliable target men.

Pools’ Search for Firepower

Hartlepool’s struggles in front of goal have been evident this term, with just nine goals from their opening eight National League fixtures. The departure of Mani Dieseruvwe, who netted 43 times in 89 outings, left a significant gap that summer recruits Alex Reid and Danny Johnson have so far been unable to fully fill. Reid has scored three times but Johnson is still waiting for his first goal and recently lost his starting spot to Luke Charman.

Supporters have voiced concerns over the lack of options from the bench, and Oliver’s arrival is expected to provide both competition and know-how to a relatively young attacking group.

Manager and Player Reaction

“I’m buzzing to be here,” Oliver told the club’s official website. “Once I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer.”

Manager Simon Grayson added that the striker will bring “a wealth of experience” and “a new dimension to the team,” underlining the importance of the move as Pools look to sharpen their cutting edge in the final third.

Writer’s View

This signing looks like a smart piece of business for Hartlepool. While Oliver may not be the same prolific scorer he once was, his experience in the Football League could prove invaluable in tight National League contests. With Reid showing early promise and Johnson still finding his feet, Oliver offers a different option, the kind of presence who can both hold the ball up and provide leadership in attacking areas.

If he can chip in with goals while helping to guide younger forwards, his impact could go beyond the scoresheet and become central to Hartlepool’s ambitions this season.
