Our Three Predictions For Bolton Wanderers vs Plymouth Argyle

  • Prediction 1Ā –Ā  Caleb Watts To Score – 13/5
  • Prediction 2Ā – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 1/1
  • Prediction 3 – Bolton Wanderers To Win – 8/13

First Prediction For Bolton Wanderers vs Plymouth Argyle – Caleb Watts To Score – 13/5

Despite being a makeshift striker for Argyle on the opening day, Caleb Watts excelled in what was a bad game all around for his side. Briefly bringing his side back into the game with a second-half goal, the former Exeter City man had six efforts on goal against what was a steadfast Barnsley defence, only two of which came after Jack Shepherd was sent off for a second yellow card. With no signs of a new striker emerging just yet, Watts may be asked to play up front by Tom Cleverley again and could have a great shot at scoring against a Bolton defence that struggled with the limited opportunities they faced against Stockport County.

Second Prediction For Bolton Wanderers vs Plymouth Argyle – Under 2.5 Goals Scored – 1/1

Both sides had torrid games in their openers. For Bolton, their attacking unit floundered against Stockport with just two shots on target and only Amari Cozier-Duberry forcing the keeper into action out of the starting front four of Steven Schumacher’s side. Plymouth on the other hand look in serious trouble for finding goals based on their opening performance. Of course, Watts found the net and could do the same in this game, but other than him, neither Xavier Amaechi or summer signing Owen Oseni caused many issues for Corey Addai. These two sides may struggle again in this game.

Third Prediction For Bolton Wanderers vs Plymouth Argyle – Bolton Wanderers To Win – 8/13

Bolton did seem to have plenty of chances against Stockport, even if they were wasteful when it came to it. John McAtee had an off game with County nullifying his presence, but against Plymouth, he and, by extension, his team may have more joy. Steven Schumacher’s side do have the attacking talent there and with how poor Plymouth’s defenders were in giving away possession and preventing chances, the Trotters’ attack may rediscover form with the creativity of McAtee and Joel Randall creating chances. It may be a close game but Bolton will have the edge in front of their home fans.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head

Bolton enter this game off of a tough defeat to Stockport County, with summer signing Malik Mothersille and Kyle Wootton scoring for the hosts at Edgeley Park. Nevertheless, it has been a promising pre-season for the Trotters, with wins over Hibernian and Preston North End. Incoming signings include Amari Cozier-Duberry and Mason Burstow, both on loan from Brighton and Hull City respectively. In midfield, following the big money sale of George Thomason to Wrexham, both Xavier Simons and Ethan Erhahon have joined, with the latter making his debut from the bench late on against Stockport.

Plymouth meanwhile are still on the lookout for a new striker, and their lack of a proven League One threat may have cost them dearly against Barnsley, who played the final third of their game at Home Park with ten men. The Tykes looked comfortable against the Devon side with three goals to their name, with tough days in the office for summer signing Brendan-Wiredu-Sarpong and Kornel Szucs. In terms of other incomings, Tom Cleverley has signed midfielder Bradley Ibrahim after his promising loan spell at Crawley Town, as well as Caleb Watts and Luca Ashby-Hammond, all three making their debuts in that game. Pre-season was a much more mixed bag for them with a loss to Bristol City in their final outing before last weekend.

These two sides last met in the much anticipated 2023 EFL Trophy Final, with Bolton decimating the Pilgrims at Wembley with a 4-0 win. However, it was Plymouth who had the last laugh that season, with now-Trotters boss Steven Schumacher leading them to promotion as champions of League One, whilst Ian Evatt’s Wanderers flatlining in the playoff final against Oxford United. In the two league games that season, Plymouth won 2-0 at home and drew the away fixture.
