Southampton Green Light Striker’s European Exit

Southampton starlet Rento Takaoka has completed a season-long loan to Sport Republic affiliate Valenciennes FC.

The Japan youth international becomes the first player from his country to represent the French club and will feature in their reserve ranks during 2025/26.

Young Forward Heads to France for Development Opportunity

Takaoka, who only joined Southampton earlier this year after turning 18, arrives at Valenciennes with high expectations despite not yet playing senior football. He was recruited from Nissho Gakuen High School in Japan, having impressed for his national team at the U17 World Cup in 2023.

The 18-year-old has trained with the French Championnat National side during pre-season and is expected to gain valuable experience in senior football, albeit initially through the club’s second string.

Speaking about the move, Southampton’s head of group talent strategy Andy Goldie explained the significance of the loan in the club’s broader player development vision.

“Rento’s loan arrival at Valenciennes is an important step in our youth development strategy. Rento is a young talent we recruited from Japan. He’s a Japanese international who played in the U17 World Cup last year. Valenciennes is a great environment to help him progress this season.”

Simon Raux, director of the Valenciennes training centre, echoed that sentiment and pointed to the deeper collaboration between the two clubs, both owned by Sport Republic.

“Rento’s arrival is truly symbolic in relation to the Sport Republic group and the mutualisation between the clubs. There was the departure of Joachim Kayi Sanda last year to Southampton, and this year, there is Rento’s loan to VAFC. It’s an enriching experience for all the players and all the parties.”

Valenciennes and Southampton recently met in a pre-season friendly, further strengthening the ties between the two setups. The French club were relegated from Ligue 2 in 2024 and are aiming to bounce back via a mix of youth and experienced players.

A club statement from Southampton concluded:

“The club wishes Rento well for the coming season and looks forward to following his progress.”

Takaoka is the second Saints academy player to move to Valenciennes this summer, following defender Derrick Abu, who joined permanently after his St Mary’s contract expired.

Writer’s View

This is a textbook example of the multi-club model in action, with Sport Republic using its network to provide a clear pathway for talent development. Rento Takaoka’s move to France ticks every box: competitive senior football, a familiar organisational structure, and a setting where his progress can be monitored closely.

If he adapts well to the demands of European football, particularly in a physically intense third-tier French league, he could return a far more seasoned prospect. The success of such arrangements will be vital to Saints’ ability to develop and retain elite youth talent under their current ownership model.
