Our Three Predictions For Coventry City vs Hull City

  • Prediction 1 – Ephron Mason-Clark To Score – 9/4
  • Prediction 2 – Both Teams To Score – 5/6
  • Prediction 3 – Coventry City To Win – 8/11

First Prediction For Coventry City vs Hull City – Ephron Mason-Clark To Score – 9/4

The final stretch of last season saw Frank Lampard’s side find goals from wide areas amid the struggles of Ellis Simms. Haji Wright and Ephron Mason-Clark were dependable options for the Sky Blues. The latter in particular had a promising first season back in the West Midlands, with six goals in 34 appearances. With Haji Wright only just returning from injury after his Gold Cup campaign with the US, the 25-year-old will be the focal point for this attack. Whilst Wright may return after appearing on the bench against St. Pauli, Mason-Clark’s place is more assured and that could see him score on the opening day.

Second Prediction For Coventry City vs Hull City – Both Teams To Score – 5/6

There are vulnerabilities in both sides heading into the game. Of course, the headlines have been going towards Hull amid their transfer embargo, leaving them unable to loan in or pay money for any incoming transfers. Having both lost Alfie Jones and Sean McLoughlin this window to Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers, respectively, Sergej Jakirovic will have to contend with a new defence. Coventry’s defence will still look the same from last season, but their late-season form in defence left much to be desired. With the last five contests ending with both sides scoring, that streak could continue as these two sides look to have a positive start to the season.

Third Prediction For Coventry City vs Hull City – Coventry City To Win – 8/11

Last season’s playoff contenders will likely be challenging once again to reach the promised land, and this game is a great chance to put themselves on track immediately. Hull may struggle for goals with none of their strikers being prolific since arriving at the club, and may rely too heavily on the talented Abu Kamara to spearhead their attack. With Coventry retaining their squad from last season and adding some quality depth, this could be the Sky Blues’ best chance since their playoff final loss to Luton Town to seal promotion. With home advantage in hand against a club under new management, Lampard’s side are the favourites for this contest.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head

Coventry City come into the season having lost in dramatic fashion to the eventual playoff winners in Sunderland, having finished fifth place. Despite a mid-season managerial change seeing long-time servant Mark Robins sacked and replaced by former Derby County boss Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues were undeterred and spearheaded by Haji Wright, reaching the playoffs for the second time in the past three years. It has been a great summer for Coventry, with just one big name sale in Luis Binks to Brondby. They have been quiet compared to their Championship rivals in terms of incomings, with Carl Rushworth joining on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion to become their first-choice keeper, alongside signings for Kaine Kesler-Hayden from Aston Villa and Miguel Brau from Spanish side Granada. Their pre-season results have been fairly mixed, with a heavy loss to Monaco, a win over Bristol Rovers and draws against St. Pauli and Real Betis.

Hull City have had a much more turbulent summer. Manager Ruben Selles was sacked after securing survival on the last day and has since been replaced with Sergej Jakirovic. More importantly, the EFL have placed the club under a three-window transfer embargo, meaning the club have only been able to recruit free agents. Nevertheless, they have made plenty of moves, including two new centre backs in out-of-contract West Bromwich Albion man Semi Ajayi and Akin Famewo from Sheffield Wednesday to replace the outgoing Alfie Jones and Sean McLoughlin. New attackers have also joined after Joao Pedro’s contract was cancelled, with Joel Ndala and Enis Destan arriving. Hull went through a strong pre-season, beating Sunderland and Stockport County and drew their most recent outing against Getafe.

Coventry won once and drew in the two league fixtures last season, marking the first time in nearly 20 years that the Sky Blues avoided defeat to Hull in a season. Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni scored twice to overcome the Tigers at home, whilst it was a 1-1 draw in East Yorkshire in their most recent contest, with Abu Kamara cancelling out Matt Grimes’ first-half opener.
