Bristol Rovers Announce Promotion Hero Return

Ellis Harrison has returned to Bristol Rovers, signing a one-year deal as the club strengthens its attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

The 31-year-old forward, who began his career at the Mem, reunites with head coach Darrell Clarke after seven years away.

Rovers Reunite With Promotion Hero

The Gas have confirmed the signing of Harrison on a one-year contract, marking an emotional return for a player who made over 200 appearances during his first spell at the club. Harrison came through the Rovers academy and was a key figure in the side that secured back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two under Clarke in 2015 and 2016.

The forward left the club in 2018 for Ipswich Town but has now come full circle, linking back up with Clarke and returning to familiar surroundings at the Memorial Stadium. Speaking after signing, Harrison expressed his delight at being back, praising the influence Clarke has had on his career and calling the move an “easy decision”.

Harrison, who wore the Gas shirt between 2011 and 2018, will wear squad number 19 for the upcoming season.

Clarke Gets His Man Again

The reunion with Clarke is the second of Harrison’s career, having also played under him at Port Vale. Their mutual trust is clearly a driving force behind the move, with the striker admitting he always gives everything for a manager who has backed him consistently.

Since leaving Rovers, Harrison has built a solid career in the EFL, turning out for Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town and Port Vale. He joined MK Dons in 2023 and made 59 appearances across two seasons, scoring 12 goals. In the second half of last season, he moved on loan to Walsall, where he added three goals in 12 games.

Director of football Ricky Martin hailed the deal, describing Harrison as a perfect fit for what the club needs in attack and highlighting his expected contribution in terms of both goals and leadership.

Writer’s View

This is more than just a feel-good signing. Harrison knows the club, knows the manager, and still has the physicality and nous to make an impact in League Two. His recent goal returns suggest he’s far from done, and in a youthful squad, having someone who has already achieved promotion with the Gas could be crucial. For a team aiming to push up the table, Harrison brings identity, edge, and experience in equal measure. It’s a move that makes perfect sense.
