The 2025/26 League One season is almost upon us, and the early betting markets have thrown up a fascinating spread of promotion contenders and relegation candidates.
With managerial changes, structural rebuilds, and varying levels of squad stability across the division, there are plenty of talking points ahead of the opening weekend.
League One Promotion Odds
Luton Town have been installed as favourites for the title at 7/2. Matt Bloomfield’s side dropped from the Championship last season but are well-equipped to bounce back immediately. Bloomfield halted the club’s alarming slide late last term and now has the benefit of parachute payments to fine-tune a squad that many believe is too good for this level. His side blends experience and power, and the expectation is that they will be firmly in the top two mix.
Stockport County are also attracting serious interest, priced at 6/1 for a top two finish. The Hatters have surged through the divisions under Dave Challinor, with strong backing from owner Mark Stott and an infrastructure that continues to evolve. Despite the departure of Louie Barry and Isaac Olaofe, the club have responded smartly with their record signing Malik Mothersille and remain on an upward curve. The squad is united, balanced, and built for success.
Huddersfield Town are third-favourites at 6/1, although there is some caution due to the new managerial setup. Lee Grant has taken a targeted approach to recruitment, reportedly mimicking some of the tactical principles seen at Ipswich Town, where he previously worked. The team has quality on paper, but the lack of continuity in the dugout may see them take time to settle.
Bolton Wanderers, at 11/1, are hoping for another title run under Steven Schumacher. The former Plymouth boss knows how to succeed at this level, having guided Argyle to 101 points in 2022/23. His summer recruitment has focused on pace and attacking threat, which could reignite a squad that fell short last season. Blackpool (11/1), Cardiff City (15/2), and Plymouth Argyle (15/2) are all closely matched in the chasing pack.
Further down the list, Leyton Orient are 11/4 to secure a top six finish. Richie Wellens has rebuilt after losing key players and remains a popular figure at Brisbane Road. The identity of the squad has been preserved, and the club has not yet fully explored the loan market, which has historically been one of Wellens’ strengths.

League One Relegation Odds
At the opposite end, Rotherham United look vulnerable. Priced at 5/1 for relegation, they are the shortest odds among the likely strugglers. New boss Matt Hamshaw faces a huge task following a difficult year under Steve Evans. Although well thought of at the club, Hamshaw inherits a squad lacking depth and consistency. The Millers also lag behind similar-sized clubs in off-field development.
Port Vale (66/1 to win the league) are another side being tipped to struggle. Despite keeping most of their promotion-winning squad, the club has not significantly strengthened. Manager Darren Moore will be aiming for consolidation, but many feel the squad quality places them in the bottom four.
While plenty of teams are still doing business before the window closes, early indications point to a fierce battle at both ends of the table. Luton and Stockport are well placed to fight for promotion, while Rotherham and Port Vale may be looking over their shoulders throughout the campaign.
